Bass Pedals...

Besides a tuner, what is the first "go-to" pedal necessary for your gig?
(We really want to know....:)

Re: Bass Pedals...

Were I to get a bass rig, I'd get a good tuner, a T-Rex Bass Juice and the MXR Bass envelope filter.

Re: Bass Pedals...

While I don't play bass out or have a board for it alot of bands I have mixed or have watched usually have some kind of bass distortion of fuzz usually a big muff of sorts also compression is very popular.

Re: Bass Pedals...

It really depends on the gig that I'm doing as to what is on my pedalboard, but here are some of the "regulars" that you'll find me with.

Tuner - Rocktron Unity Tuner
Volume Pedal - Visual Sound Visual Volume
Compressor - Either the Rocktron Sacred Fire or Pigtronix Philosophers Bass Compressor
Tremolo - Black Cat Mini Trem or El Rey Effects Chicago Typewriter
Chorus - ProTone Pedals Nectar Chorus or Rocktron Dreamstar (both wildly different, so it depends on mood)

Re: Bass Pedals...

My "new" Class D Portaflex has built-in compression, but I just use it to keep the amp and speakers from breaking up.
I once had an old (pre-Sovtek) Electric Mistress Deluxe, to fake some Anthony Jackson chorus sounds. Sold it for food money.
One of my homies from New Rochelle was all into that 70s funk envelope filter sound, but it took too much off the bottom end to suit me.

Axe---cord---amp.

Re: Bass Pedals...

This is cool, informative data so far. I like Axe-Cord-Amp as well but I can't resist those little colored toys on the floor just like my geetar bretheren. Keep it comin' I will pay it forward.

Re: Bass Pedals...

My tc electronic amp head has compression and modelled power stage valve overdrive built in. The only processors that I might feel the need to add would be Auto-Wah filtering and chorus. With the Chapman Stick, I might want a looper delay.

To a person of my age, the expression Bass Pedals equates to just one thing - the mighty Moog Taurus II.

Re: Bass Pedals...

mxr bass fuzz deluxe. it's great, there's a dry and a wet level, along with tone and fuzz. sounds huge!
bbe sonic maximizer. i like how it fills out the bottom end and brings a bit of bite to the highs, i'm constantly changing the settings through the gig.

right now i'm looking to get a compressor, and i have a hartke preamp pedal on layaway.

Re: Bass Pedals...

Definitely a compressor. Overdrive on a bass, I don't see it being as needed. I like the sound of basses pretty clean.

Re: Bass Pedals...

I use a Sadowsky outboard pre-amp/ DI box with a Mark Bass MB Octaver Analog pedal on occasion.

Re: Bass Pedals...

I don't like effects much for bass. All I ever use is a Tech21 NYC SansAmp Bass Driver DI. That enables me to get a good tone no matter what amp I am using.

Re: Bass Pedals...

The only pedal that I've ever used on bass was the chanel selector on an old Mark IV amp that I had. Any effect that I'm after can be done through tuning or EQ.

Re: Bass Pedals...

I love my MarkBass Compressore... I run that into a BBE Maximizer, into my PF500, and I'm good. My Portaflex has a compressor, but it sounds like garbage..

I'm still searching for a good overdrive pedal, and right now I'm liking my BBE Blacksmith, but it's geared more towards guitar.

Re: Bass Pedals...

I just got the Pigtronix Bass Station in the mail to demo yesterday, and that looks like a solid unit. It's got the Philosopher Bass Compressor built in, a boost switch (for up to 12db of gain), an effects loop (that can be on or off) and a DI out. Looking forward to testing it, as I think it's a clever and very useful pedal.
