ive never played a 5 string bass that i thought sounded as good as a good 4 string.
play a fender 4 string jazz, then a 5 string jazz. the 4 sounds better to my ears.
play a 4 string stingray, then a 5. the 4 sounds better.
play an ibanez sr 400, then a sr 405. the 4 sounds better.

i think part of it is the construction differences necessitated by the extra tension and extended range.
