Bass through a guitar amp?

Can you play a bass through a guitar amp? I've poked around on the net and some people say you can as long you don't push the amp very hard, and some say you shouldn't do it all. I have a 50 watt mesa rectoverb head and a 2x12 recto cab, and obviously I don't want to take any chance hurting her. I know it probably won't sound all that great, I just wanna make sure it's safe.

I ask is because I just picked up a Schecter stiletto studio 5 string for a really good price on ebay, and I don't have a bass amp obviously.

I think it's fine as long as you don't turn up the low frequencies on the amp EQ.

yeah, dont try and practice with it - home practice should be fine though

if your just jamming to records or w/e, roll back on the neck pickup - the neck pickup is the one putting the strain on the speaker..

Thanks Imp. I scored it off ebay from a wholesaler(Great feedback). Brand new. $175 less than american musical supply, because of a small knick down by the knobs. Got a love those scratch and dent specials.

Ok, so roll back on the neck pickup. Is it the overall volume from the amp to the speakers that I got to watch for or do I also need to be careful of the gain(preamp tubes) and output tubes level also?

i think the main thing people do with amps is fart the speaker out with low frequencies (ESPECIALLY with a 5 string ) and damage it to the point where the wire splits.. without a fully resistant speaker, its as if there isnt one attached at all..

i havnt really looked at the possibility of damaging valves with them though, im gonna have to look that up.. in the mean time, don't try and go for the brown sound :laugh2:
