Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

I saw Jmaes Brown's Bassist using a Music Man Stingray last night, and that thing has KILLER low end! It was crazy!

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

i'd hafta say p basses are the best for backing heavy rythm guitar, but ernie balls are the best for heavy bass countermelody & solo type playing

i really love p-bass specials, hate p basses, but love the specials, i got a j now & every once in awhile i struggly to get it sounding throaty enough, and i hate p bass necks, so p bass special it is, i would say it offers way more versatility than the others listed

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

The best bass tones I've ever heard were a Musicman Stingray plugged into a stereo rig of 2 Ampeg SVT II's and a wall of Ampeg cabs, or a Stingray plugged into an Eden World Tour 800 fullstack 4-10/1-15. All good basses can sound good, but I love Musicman Stingrays the best.....or Lakland.

This past weekend, I tried talking my bassist into buying the Duncan preamp wiring harness for the Musicman Stingray. Anyone buy that yet?

Musicman basses will give you that much more. Its what the Precision would have been had Leo still been in charge at Fender.

Norman,
I thought Leo did design the MusicMan bass before selling the company to Ernie Ball. I believe that's why the G & L humbucking pickup looks very similar to the MusicMan.

anyway, an interesting poll for me - I'm building a P Bass :)

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

c'mon people, p-bass special, you can't go wrong

oh jeez, you could put in a musicman active humbucker instead of the j-pickup if you're building one, and then have a j-neck

that would be some amazing stuffs right there

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

Fodera Emperor. IMO the only bass that surpasses an Alembic ;)

www.fodera.com

But I voted Alembic because as a production bass there´s nothing better IMO ;)

And I´m sorry, I don´t wanna add insult to injury, but listing ESP with their relatively small selection of mostly knockoffs but forgetting Warwick, widely regarded as one of the premier manufacturers of quality basses for all sorts of musicians, I dunno (just because you haven´t seen one live doesn´t mean that hundreds of people are wrong. Particularly in Europe Warwick sales are at an unbelievable Level, 2 or 3 years ago they had literally a 50% market share if the Info I recieve isn´t "tainted". There was literally one Warwick sold for every other bass that was sold, and that was my sales experience as well. Alone here in Freiburg I can verify that there are round 500, because that´s how many I sold and I wasn´t the only dealer. Particularly the Corvettes and Streamers went out like hotcakes ;).

Damn, that MUST be Europe. Here in the States, they're moderately popular with a loyal but not enormous fanbase. I still haven't met one in person. And, yeah, my poll options are based on personal experience. Just like YOU'RE basing your opinion on personal experience. How is your bias towards Warwick any more or less legitimate than my bias against it? I'll reiterate - outside of the rabid gearhead community, nobody in the States even thinks about Warwick. Joe Average isn't even CONSIDERING plunking down 3 grand for a bass, especially one that ugly.

Warwick has a loyal cult following that wants to tear me apart for not including them in this poll.... message recieved loud and clear. Let's drop the Warwick debate now.

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

I agree that P-basses are still the industry standard, but I've always been (and probably always will be) a big fan of J-Basses. They seem to have a bit smoother all around tone, and HUGE amounts of bottom end.

Just to clear this up: You´re confusing cold hard facts (official sales reports)with personal opinion. I don´t like Warwick basses at all, and tried to steer customers away from them on a regular basis ;)

Again, Alembic and Fodera rock my 5-string world, not Warwick :headbang:

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

i LOVE my p-bass...and as soon as i put some SD's in there...it will be the perfect 4-string...but the 5-string stingray...that's just a HEAVY tone there!!!

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

WAL: The most unbelievable fretless GRRRROOOOWWWWLLLLL on the planet, sounds like an angry panther.

ALEMBIC: That warm, toasty crisp sound that Stanley Clarke made famous!

FODERA: Hard to describe but I LOVE the crisp throatyness of this particular bass, sort of like a Music-Man tone on steroids!

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

Fender, P bass
G&L, SB-1
G&L, SB-2
G&L, L-5000

I like all four of the basses I listed above.

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

My first thought was...THUNDERBIRD...They call it THUNDERbird for a reason...then i remembered a group I played with and the bass player used an ASAT Tele Bass...That thing KILLED!!! Then I thought even harder and the truth is that as far as bass tones go...Fender bass(A P-Bass is my first choice) and an Ampeg amp(an SVT or a V4 will do nicely) will do the job the best in my book!

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

TBirds never impressed me. They get low tones, to be sure, but all I've ever heard with the stock pickups are varying degrees of mud.
I officially have changed my answer after this last weekend. My bass player was using my '78 J-bass with the EMG's in it and that thing was THUNDEROUS, even through a minimal rig (410 cab with about 400 watts pushing it).

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

i got a washburn 5 string with EMGs, but i rarely look for the p-bass growl thing.. most of what i play is like a percussive octave slap on the root note, fitting in with the drums..

still love P-Basses, i just picked up the 5 string cheap on ebay heh

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

A Ric 4003 or a Stingray. ( I have a Maple-Glo Ric ;) ).

Both are darned comfortable too. :burnout:

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

I'm not into basses but as our bassist says, nothing can match a 5-string MM Sting Ray.
