Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

:offtopic:

I don't mean to beat a dead horse or go too far off-topic, but with regard
to the mentions of Warwick basses--they're distributed here via a company
called Dana B. Goods (http://www.danabgoods.com/) which was affiliated
with Seymour Duncan's company some years back. I had applied there for
a job, and they were in the same offices. Small world!

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

I'm a j-bass man, but I think the amp/cab will probably have more effect for ya than which bass. Ampeg ampeg ampeg!!! Though I have an old sunn head that sounds damn sexy.

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

John Campbell gets amazing tone with his (custom?) peavey Millennium's through a mesa bass 400+
(i think john's basses are customs because the pickup configuration if different than on the millenniums on the peavey site)

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

Zombie thread of the undead!

I currently own 4 basses:
A 1979 Gibson Thunderbird
A 1971-ish Gibson EB-0
A 1965 Fender Jazz Bass
A 1998 G&L L2000.

The biggest, baddest, meanest sounding bass of mine is the G&L.

The T-Bird is big and mellow- but it's got a lot of mids- it kind of honks instead of growls.

The Jazz is great, but it doesn't have that huge bottom end.

The EB-0 is nothing but bottom end. But short scale and a pickup at the end of the fretboard lends itself to a lot of indistinct 42hz rumble.

Musicman. The active electronics and splitable humbucker let you do almost anything.

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

Lets venture outside the box.
A Minimoog with a distortion pedal will kill any fretted instrument. Much deeper, lower, and fatter. In fact you may need special speakers to handle the low end.

Mincer-I realy enjoyed reading about your gear you've had or tried out in the past. I found it very informative. Almost ANYONE could visit the link and learn somthing. I would recomend doing this to EVERYONE.

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

The bass player in my band has a $4000 Warwick, and his next purchase is going to be a Music Man Stingray.

I guess they've always kinda been the ultimate rock bass to me...(the Stingray)

Wow, thanks, you rock! I thought I was the only one obsessive about such things...

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

Of the one's I've tried, MM Stingray....a close second was the Godin bass I ended up buying (couldn't afford the Stingray even if I wanted it....though I did prefer the neck on the Godin better).

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

i love the stingray, but i also think billy sheehans bass sounds huge. that neck pickup is nuts. i dont mean just when he plays it, lol, i mean like even if i or someone else plays it. i think it sounds great. i voted for the stingray tho.

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

Man, this thread just wont die will it?

Good call, because I have been awakened to new lows. Ric 4003s rule all of bass land with an iron fist, they get my new vote. Oh and the minimoog thing is true too, they rule. Gotta save up for one of those.

Re: Bass with HEAVIEST tone?

i'm tempted to chip in my totally shagged and obsolete washburn XB-500.. easily the heaviest lump of wood i've ever seen used on a bass, it has EMG 35P and 35J's.. at the moment, it has new heavy gauge (50s) on it, and it's slaying pretty much everything else i hear.. its all about wood type, thickness and choice of pickups! i think it's solid alder, pretty much a metallers P-bass :)
