Basswood vs. Mahogany

Re: Basswood vs. Mahogany

I look down on Basswood.I don't believe it belongs on a great guitar, only cheap ones. Since its a cheap wood, of course many people are going to try and say it sounds good so they can make more money off it.It is really a aweful tonewood. It sucks. Those of you with Basswood , get rid f it and get some Alder or mahogany.

This guy disagrees with you, but what does he know....

OR...Korina! It is probably my favorite tone wood for a solid body electric.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

He could make tons of $$$$$$$$$$ using anything from Balsa to Joshua Tree wood but he chose Basswood. Why?

Re: Basswood vs. Mahogany

^ no really. It is. Go look on the interent. Its like trying to say a Chiropracter isnt a quack, when in reality all they are are quacks who couldn't get into medical school to be a MD, much less a skilled surgeoun . Basswood is the Chiropracter of tonewoods. Most the time you can play the 'jerry -drunk 'card , but not this time.Check the internet on Balsa..er..'Asswood.'... You can't lay this all on me this time .

It seems you enjoy spending more time bashing gear/material you find inferior than trying to improve. Also, it is much easier for anyone (including you and me) to over-simplify than truly evaluate each individual case. Though simplicity can naturally be attractive, which would be, ironically, a simple explanation of why people will over-simplify.

Re: Basswood vs. Mahogany

I ended up getting rid of my mahogany guitars because the tone was too dark for me. I tried swapping pups but nothing sounded good so I was just spending a bunch money trying make the guitars work, now I just start with basswood.

I had a similar experience w a mahogany gothic les paul that I had for a short time but sold off because I could get no joy from. It was very dark sounding, almost zero mids sounding despite me trying various A5 and ceramic magnet pups in it. The "too dark" /zero mids sounding aspect is something I notice with most other all-mahogany (no maple top) guitars I have tried.

I prefer basswood. The highs are there but not as pronounced as alder or ash, the mids are present but a little scooped, and the bass (to a fault) are a little boomy but I compensate by cutting the bass freqs via the amp's eq section. The lite weight factor is a nice side benefit as far as playing comfort. I could see a blues player finding basswood lacking in highs, but it sounds pretty ideal for hard rock and metal.

Re: Basswood vs. Mahogany

I have never used Basswood, but I was always under the imprtession on the net that it was sort of cheap and is good for high gain stuff. One of the main reasons I have stayed away was because again I heard it does not take abuse well, not that I abuse my guitars.

well metal maniac after making a true a$$ of yourself all I gotta say is most of us with basswood guitars probably have better sound and tone than you. ...:lmao:

That's just a small sample of builders who use basswood. There's good basswood and there's bad basswood just like there's good mahogany and there's bad mahogany.

Re: Basswood vs. Mahogany

Personally, I find basswood to have a more focussed midrange peak than mahogany, which tends to be more like a broadband swell.

Also, I find that that peak works better for guitar than bass - to me, in a bass, it ends up somewhat nasal in the mids, and honky.

My 2 cents...

Re: Basswood vs. Mahogany

I built a guitar because I had a block of Honduran mahogany. Had that block been basswood, i wouldn't have bothered.

Re: Basswood vs. Mahogany

Its like any other wood. Some sounds good,.some doesnt.

In general I find basswood to have a big midrange and compression..a "rounding off" of lows and highs...the midrange is big but not very complex or deep, if you will. Its punchy, without alot of character. If much of your tone lies in your preamps, and pickups, it is excellent, but low gain pickups, and moderate vintage crunchiness and cleans are really bland.

Re: Basswood vs. Mahogany

I like both to be honest I just got a new Mahogany Ibanez and its lows and mids are so beefy and big sounding but that could easily be the pickups over my Tele deluxes wide range humbuckers

Re: Basswood vs. Mahogany

It's a consistency thing. Basswood doesn't have the wild variations in quality that you find in what people call mahogany.

I like basswood just fine, it's kinda thuddy but when you use bright pickups, sounds great, especially with maple boards.

Not to mention this thread was posted on the SD FB page.

Now the whole world knows about our special maniac.
