Battery powered amps?

Hey guys,

I'm thinking about getting a battery powered amp for long road trips and impromptu jams while I'm on vacation... Has anyone here tried any out and recommend some? Which ones should i avoid? Are any out there worth the $$$ or should I just save my $$$? I've already got a little marshall battery amp (MS4? i think?) and I like the portability but not the transistor radio sound. I'm looking for something that will run on batteries, but has more balls...

Thanks,

Re: Battery powered amps?

I know EHX make one, and so too Crate.

I have a Pig Nose, you know, the one they use in the movie Crossroads.
It runss of 8 AA batteries. I just wack rechargables(sp?) in there every now and again. And this thing can get loud !
I was phoned my the front desk, while at a hotel in Miami, telling me that the room next door complained about my noise . . .

Hope this helps !

Ya know, up here in alaska; quite a few people still are off the grid. Had a buddy that would charge up a few 12 volt batterys at my place, haul them home so he could play his old marshall and goldtop. I think he used an inverter to convert 12 VDC to 110 AC. Probably be ok if wasn't tube amp.

Re: Battery powered amps?

I just bought the VOX DA-5 for the boy that lives with us for Christmas. I played around with it in the store for awhile, and it sounds surprisingly good. Has some nice features to.

Re: Battery powered amps?

Roland Microcube. Best portable battery powered amp out there, period.

Re: Battery powered amps?

I have a Smokey amp. It's got a decent sound. I can plug in headphones and the 9 volt battery lasts forever...fits in yer pocket.

Re: Battery powered amps?

I've played the EH portable and it is very nice. Doesn't get dirty on it's own but it takes pedals well. Good solid tone and VERY FREAKING LOUD for a 15 watt battery powered amp. Uses a lead acid motorcycle battery for power and is very sweet looking to boot. I heartily recommend checking one out if I were you.

Re: Battery powered amps?

There is only one amp that gives great natural complex tone while still on batteries, Marshall Major of course.

Re: Battery powered amps?

Vox DA-5 or the Roland Microcube. Both great. The vox's tones sound a LITTLE more authentic, esp the cleans, but the Cube is more flexible with effects combinations. I tried everything out there several months ago, and these were the only two that were not a joke as far as tone goes. I bought the Microcube because I already had the bigger 30 watt Vox, and just wanted something different. I love it. Ended up buying another one to keep at school. Batteries last a pretty long time. And the best thing about both of these amps......COLOR choices!

Nope. The Crate limo blows those Microcubes up. Also, it has a sealed internal battery- you recharge it. It has a PA channel, and a 2 channel guitar side too- plus built in digital effects- a 10" and a tweeter too. I use mine for all of my acoustic gigs- it is loud, doesn't sound like a telephone, and is nice and clear. Runs for up to 8 hours on a charge- you never, ever have to buy batteries.
