I know how to set my EQ. But have you tried running an EL84 poweramp next to the other guitarist's Dual Rectifier or 5150? It will inevitably sound/feel small, even if it's loud enough. I use the Dual Rec as an example because even if it's a scoopy amp, no one is saying "man, Dual Rectifiers don't sit well on a mix".all guitar players I know think the are not loud enough
the bass player never starts the amp cranking war
usually its hearing loos or the eq is set for playing alone not in a mix
Or one of those insanely loud scoopy classic Fender amps like a Twin or whatever.
But I'm not trying to be James Hetfield in the 80's either.

I agree.Actually, it is usually the drummer that sets the base volume of the stage. If a drummer is a loud one, I find it very hard to hear things clearly.
However, gotta keep in mind it's a Punk band I'm playing with right now. And I normally play Metal. Playing drums quietly for those genres is almost like attempting to play Jazz on a raging Dual Rectifier's gain channel turned up loud, LOL. So it's a good idea to keep a controlled kinda loud, IME. And my EL84 poweramp is certainly not sounding/feeling controlled at the levels I'm at.
