For small tube amps, those little Bugera combos seem to pack a punch for low dollars. If I were to buy a small tube amp tomorrow, it'd be the Vox Night Train at $500 or less.
I've only seen videos of the haze 40 but it seems to be a decent sounding amp. Maybe it's not "the" marshall tone we hear in our heads but it seems like a truly decent amp. The non-master volume channel looks like the winner on that one
You could get something with a good implementation of power scaling, but that would probably be expensive.
The Marshall Haze series amps produce decent sounds but early production examples seem to be riddled with niggling electrical problems. (Pops when changing channel. Noises when flipping the Standby switch. Noticable delay when changing channel with the remote footswitch. That sort of thing.) Even when the amp chassis is working well, the combo is let down by its MDF cabinet. Proper Marshalls use marine birch ply.
If you don't mind going retro, seek out a Fender Champ II or Princeton II Reverb.
If you want a small, quick, convenient bedroom practice/rehearsal/recording amp, the Roland Micro Cube is hard to beat. I never rated its British Stack preset. The answer to that is to buy a Marshall Guv'nor pedal. The other weakness is the MDF cabinet. These can resonate in an unpleasant way. OTOH, remember how low the MRSP is?
Blackstar is getting good reviews. Check out their website.
Cuz nothing can beat the sound of a Marshall.
Finding an amp is not so much a competition as it is like trying to find a great pair of comfortable shoes. What fits for one person may drive another to tears...

The new Marshall Class5 5watter looks and sounds pretty bloody sweet !

I don't want to derail the thread, but I will say this : for bedroom use, modeling amps like the roland cube series, or the vox valvetronix, seem to be a better choice. That's my opinion.
Anyways, as far as low wattage amps go, my favorite is the Epi Valve Jr. It might be because it was plugged into a 1x12 cab, but it sounded better than the Fender Champ 600 by far.
