NAD- Tweaker 15 head! (I have a few questions too...)

Hi guys,

I am officially a tweaker :)

I saw this amp (Egnater Tweaker 15 head) used but in mint condition and for a great price, so I went and snatched it up the next day. I tried it at home, through an ENGL Gigmaster 310 cabinet (1x10) and it sounds great. I loved the wide range of tones that you can get, and I only had one hour to play with it. I can't wait to get to know it better, specially for band practice.

I play in a studio with a drummer, bass, another guitar, vocals and a keyboard player will most likely join. So I was thinking of plugging it into the 12" combo that I currently use there (only for a few sessions), but for the long run get a cabinet especially for me. I was looking on the classifieds and also new (I rather buy used) and I've been able to find 4x12 cabinets for about 200 bucks, like Bugera, Line 6 and some non-brand ones. But after looking at new cabinets, I saw a Marshall Code 412 for about 200 bucks NEW! It says that it's made to handle the wide variety of tones that the Code head delivers, which is good as the tweaker also has a wide range of sounds.

What do you think? Anybody with experience with this Code 4x12? Anybody else running a small head through a big cabinet? There is also a PA at the studio, and the amp that I use is actually mic'ed the whole time. So I don't really need a huge cabinet, but for the price, I haven't found anything else that comes close. Also, (and I hope this doesn't start a war) what would be the advantage of running a 4x12 vs a 2x12 or 4x8? (to name a few) I understand that more speakers mean more power, right? So at the exact same amps settings a 4x12 will give me much more volume than my 1x10, correct?

Cheers and thanks!

Walter

I'd stay away from cheap 4x12's. They have cheap speakers and are usually made of MDF. You'd be better of with a 2x12, either convertible or ported, with some decent speakers. You can probably find one used for not much more than what you are seeing the 4x12's go for new.

I agree with Demanic . Like I said in the other thread, those budget Marshall 4x12's are kinda crappy. You're better off with a good quality 2x12.

Thanks again! I also found a 2x12 Palmer box with 2 Jensen P12R Alnico Vintage for about 150 bucks. This should be better sounding ad more suitable for my use, right?

I will bet that, yes, it should sound good. And that's a good price.

Honestly, I'm not sure, lol. Those Jensens are great and all, but I think they're more of a vintage Fender kinda sparkling clean or sizzling low-gain crunch kinda vibe. They're also very inefficient. It says 93dB on the Jensen site.

But for $150, it's not such a bad deal. I guess if you decide you don't like the Jensens, you can sell them, and get some Celestions or Eminences or something, as long as the cab is good quality, well consttructed, made of birch plywood, and whatnot.

This should be the one I saw http://www.palmer-germany.com/mi/e...B-212-2-x-12-Empty-Guitar-Cabinet-PCAB212.htm I believe it’s made of MDF, which is not a good thing, right?

MDF isn't great, but that's part of the trade off for the price. The speakers themselves should be ok. Alnico speakers generally have a sweeter sound than ceramics, and with a lower efficiency, you'll be able to crank the amp more if you want to get the power tubes cooking.
But if you think that you want something different, I'm sure that there are more choices out there.

Re: NAD- Tweaker 15 head! (I have a few questions too...)

Quick tips:

1) The Vox channel couldn't be less of a Vox channel. Roll the mids back a bit, add some treble and it's a hidden Rectifier mode to me.
2) It sounds best IMO with the gain dimed in the Clean channel, and using a bright OD pedal in front. Think more Blues Driver than Tubescreamer.
3) The loop is way too hot and will distort analog pedals.
4) I've had it for years and I still can't find an usable tone out of the USA channel. Fizzy for gain and too punchy/annoying for cleans.
5) Respect the deep/tight switch. Overly gainy tones will sound like **** if set to deep, it mushes out.

Hope you like yours as much as I've loved mine these years!

See my post in the other thread about cheap cabinets and speakers.

If you're only going to have one cabinet, a quality 2x12 with equally good speakers is probably your best bet. Seriously consider a vertical cabinet or a tilt-back stand of some sort because it's hard to hear an amp that's blasting your knees. In any small room or where there's a good PA, I actually prefer a ported, closed-back 1x12 cab because it's light and loud enough to hear myself. It also helps keep stage volume down, which translates into actually hearing your band mates.

If you're on a tight budget, definitely get Harley Benton!

Cheap as they get and they're proper plywood, not MDF. And you can get them loaded with V30's.

Even if you don't want V30's with Tweaker, (I wouldn't), you can sell them, buy better speakers, and it's still cheaper than most good used cabs.

Re: NAD- Tweaker 15 head! (I have a few questions too...)

go for the v30 2x12 and congrats I used to have one of those, it's what I traded my DSL 50W head for. The DSL needed to be cranked to get my favorite sounds,
the tweaker was really warm at low volumes, especially as the amp runs the power tubes pretty hot. Lots more compression at low volumes. At high volumes I preferred other amps cuz I found the tweaker mushy through a 1x12 so I got a Deluxe Reverb and had what I thought the USA mode SHOULD sound like.
But dang that tweaker kills for a 15W tube amp at low volumes.

Re: NAD- Tweaker 15 head! (I have a few questions too...)

If you can find a good set of RCA grey plate 6V6 power tubes at some point grab them. The Tweaker tends to gobble up PT's, those old school RCA's are damn near bulletproof and they sound really good too. Egnater pushes a lot of plate voltage thru the tubes fwiw
