What's different in those old pickups?
The bobbins were made of cardboard vs. plastic in the new ones
The magnets were alnico vs. ceramic
The pickups were wound by hand vs. machine, and wax potted.
The hook up wire was formvar (looks like cloth covering vs. vinyl coated)

hey walters
sounds like your talking about harmonics which have a lot more to do with playing technique than pickup spec though many say its a lot easier to get those tones from humbuckers than on single coils, other than that it is more dependant on your mastery of the technique than what pickup you use. though some pickups are said to be easier to pull harmonics off of (such as the JB or EMG's) but again technique has a far greater impact than pickups

get a set of vintage winds, set them very low, voila; 'bell' tones...
What 'bell' frequencies? Well, with a ring modulator, you can get eine Klangundfarben...like Stockhausen. Seriously, the harmonic content will vary depending on the note, guitar, amp, strings, pick, acoustic space, what shape your ears are in, etc etc. Pickups are not ideal devices that respond in altogether predicable ways...or they would be very boring.

What 'bell' frequencies
When playing a 50's strat each year or even the same year in the 50's have different "bell tone" frequency superimposed on top of the twang but every "bell tone" frequencys are different superimposed on top of the pickup sound how did they do this back then and what causes it please?

You'll get a really good, sweet bell tone and harmonics if your wind is very heavily scattered. The sloppier and more ball-of-yarn-ish, the better.

What kind of extenal circuit/network in series or in parallel would create more "bell tones"?
Like if i make a circuit/network that i could hook up to a normal squire strat pickup to create more "bell tones" what would the circuit/network be or do please?
