Bends sending my guitar out of tune...

I've not had this problem before but I never used to bend strings to such extremes before as I am now, the strings go out of tune after a few drastic bends, specifically my B string and e string. any ideas? the nut slots are well done. the strings arent new..

Re: Bends sending my guitar out of tune...

Issues like this almost always come down to one or more of 3 things...

-Poor set up

-Old strings

-Strings not put on correctly

Re: Bends sending my guitar out of tune...

Obvious things to check.
1) Ball ends. Make certain that these are not coming unwound.
2) Bridge saddles. Make certain that these are not shifting sideways or the strings shifting across the saddles. (Three saddle Teles can be prone to this.)
3) Exactly how old are your strings? They could be fatigued.
4) Nut slots. These need to be smooth and, possibly, lubricated.
5) String guide trees. As 4.
6) String attachment. The way in which strings wrap around the machine head posts can affect tuning stability.

Re: Bends sending my guitar out of tune...

All Funk and TGWIF said AND a friendly reminder to check and mess with all that before screwing with the tuners. A lot of people go straight for them with a tuning problem and the vast majority of the time, they're not the culprit.

Re: Bends sending my guitar out of tune...

Glenn. Two questions.
1) Which of your guitars is suffering this problem?
2) Whatever happened to your Dan Erlewine tech book? :D

Re: Bends sending my guitar out of tune...

I have the books. haha.

its my fender jaguar.

i thin the strings are just old.. they are elixir strings and they have around a month or two on. i practice almost every day.

Re: Bends sending my guitar out of tune...

The HH Jaguar has a Tune-o-Matic style bridge. Inspect the notches in the individual saddles. If necessary, smooth out the notches with a nut slotting file. Raise the bridge to compensate for removed material.

Open the books. See whether Dan Erlewine agrees with me? ;)

+1...... Usually improperly installation of the string or old strings.. In some occasions it can be the tuning machines as well, but I doubt that they "suddenly" became a problem.. I would just put on a new set of strings, stretch them out well & see what happens.

Chapped nuts? :scratchch

Re: Bends sending my guitar out of tune...

Your guitar tech should be able to fix it.......oh, wait a minute, nevermind.

Re: Bends sending my guitar out of tune...

I had a guitar where the TOM.style bridge actually rocked back and forth. Strange, I know, but check to make sure your bridge is properly fastened.

I havea gibby LP studio & sg standard, & both TOMs had movement. I added flat washers under the thumbwheels, to my desired hight, & cranked em down. This helped the tuning stability a lot.
I have bone nuts on the way for both, but that's another thread.
I HAVE BONE NUTS, SHOULD I CHAP THEM
