The Ovations are OK but in my opinion, they have to be plugged in to sound good. Their natural acoustic properties are kinda flat. They were made for being plugged in to the PA or acoustic amp. It has to do with that plastic bowl.

+1 that. Ovations sound fantastic, plugged into a PA or amp. However, I don't think they sound as good as say a Takamine, unplugged. I think you should look into Takamine guitars.

Ibanez Talman series are really good value. I paid $400 AUD for my TCM 50. It sounds nice unplugged, kinda looks nice, really easy and fun to play. And for the price its amazing how good it sounds when you plug the thing in. Great cheap acoustic, I played like 8 $1000 acoustics in the shop, saw how small the TCM 50 was and decided to try it, and it was so much better to play then the more expsensive ones. Didn't sound as good as them though.

Alvarez acoustics are a good choice for a professional sound/playability without spending alot of money. If you look at the Professional Series and Masterworks Series Alvarez guitars, you'll be surprised at what you get for the money. I've owned Guilds, Gibsons, High end Ovations, vintage Epi's, etc. over time, and the MD90 Alvarez, in my humble opinion, is as good a workingman's axe as you'll find for less than $500.00. They list at $1100.00, but you can find them all day long on Ebay for less than $500.00, your local guitar shop should sell one at around $600.00 discounted, with hard case.
