Best Aftermarket Replacement Pickup?

Re: Best Aftermarket Replacement Pickup?

My 1950's era p90 retrofitted into the 1964 Gibson Melody Maker someone put there in the mid 60's.

Short of that, my 1940s and 50's p13s and the SD black Winter.

Re: Best Aftermarket Replacement Pickup?

the best Objective + Mature Answers were given by Funkfingers , Marcello & Mincer ( True Peers ) . That is the only way to do service to the Question , with no ego or biased involved . The Guitars Characteristics , Amp , pedals, Style (Utmost) and musical Chores to do Dictate what is best for each Setup . Some others mentioned some Great + Proven pickups but they wouldn't work in my Main + 1st. standard tuned, go to Ax

Dimebucker. Any and every guitar I've put it in gives me the sound I want and expect.

Re: Best Aftermarket Replacement Pickup?

I think a better question would have been "What's your favorite replacement pickup?" but even that doesn't really help a lot of people. It's all very subjective. While I think the DD is a great pup and I absolutely the EMG 57/66, neither of them are necessarily my favorite either, because I'm more interested in what guitar I'm using for what purpose at that particular moment. If I was rocking a pop punk Epi Casino, I'd choose hotter P-90's than what I'd choose for a jazz ensemble. If I'm doing country licks on my Les Paul, I'd probably go with something that has more twang than a compressed shred machine.

Variety is the spice of life they say.

Re: Best Aftermarket Replacement Pickup?

No such thing as "the best" for me..but these are the ones I really like.

Bridge pup's:

Lace Alumitone Deathbuckers
Duncan AHB-2b (Blackout Metal)/Invader/Distortion
My handwound A4 SIN pickups 7th Sin set (both n/b)
DMZ Breed/Tone Zone/X2N
Dean DMT Baker Act (Like a fine-tuned JB)
Tesla Plasma II/Opus 4

Neck:

Dean DMT MAB Hands Without Shadows (THE epitome of a shred pup for the neck!)
SD Hotrails....great in the n/m for HSS guitars
Not much experience with true singles or P90's (I like 'buckers!)

Re: Best Aftermarket Replacement Pickup?

It depends on the actual guitar and the band where I intend to use it. I've been a SD guy since 1993 or so. You can find Invader, CC, DD or JB at the bridge and '59, Jazz or Pearly at the neck of my guitars.

Re: Best Aftermarket Replacement Pickup?

It's got to be the Duncan 59. I have installed the same 59 into Les Pauls, SGs, Strats, Teles and others, in neck or bridge positions, and it never let me down.

Re: Best Aftermarket Replacement Pickup?

I'm going to go with TV jones filtertrons purely on the dramatic improvement they mad to my gretsch.

I dropped SD59's into my LP and it improved the guitar about 20% I put a phat cat/stk3 combo in my tele for again around a 20% improvement.

The TV jones set however improved my Gretsch 200-300%
It's all subjective however and it has to be taken into account the fender & gibson had reasonable stock pups to start with, the stock filtertrons were a big steaming pile of......
