best amp for a room : a Marshall?

Re: best amp for a room : a Marshall?

I live in the country so cranking my Boogie isn't really an issue but I have a Behringer GM110 (chicken knob version) Tech 21 clone that I use at night. The "analog modeling" does a decent enough job for practicing.

+1 on the Tiny Terror. Never owned one but I've played through a few at guitar stores. Slightly pricey for me to justify for practice but I'd buy one before I would the low watt Marshalls.

Way too loud for a bedroom amp.

i had the classic 15 when they had it out and it was perfect. the 30 is their smallest classic combo now. is 30w loud? yes. is a 30w amp with a master volume and headphone jack loud? not if you want it to be. can the 30 be used for gigs? yes. does the 30 have a nice 12" speaker that does the amp justice, unlike many other combos? yes.

I got an Orange Tiny Terror head three days ago, and have spent the entire weekend with it. It's the only amp I've ever played where the half power setting was just as good as full output. 15/7W. It's also the only single channel amp I've ever played that has great British tube clean tone all the way up to Iommi's modern Laney tone, all with 3 knobs ....Vol, Tone, Gain.

I'm going to have a blast with this little amp. It can get bone crushing loud too. Pure power tube breakup.

I still stand by my recommendation on the Tubemeister 18 head. And any of the Orange lunchbox amps.....the black ones if you want super highgain.

I think those are the best small tube amps that can give you clean to highgain.

Outside of that, stick with modeling amps for low volume home practice.

I also second the Tiny Terror. Great little amps that sound just as good at low volumes as they do at high volumes.

The Tubemeister is definitely a good option, but I'd put an OD pedal in front of it if you ever want more output from it. Other than that, great little amp too. Good for getting classic overdriven Rush guitar tones.

You may be interested in an attenuator. I use one all the time. Even live.

You can get the power section to full saturation at a bedroom level and there's nothing like getting a 100watter to do that. Careful though, you'll reduce the tube life cranking them full bore all the time.

You can at least have the amp "open up" and yet be whisper quiet.
This.

I would recommend that you (OP) check out the Yamaha THR or a Vox Valvetronix.

The JCM1 is a sweet amp. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GzOtggvFyY But even at 1 Watt you may still have volume issues with family/neighbors.

The THR has great tone via headphones and using the speakers at speaking voice-level. The Valvetronix amps are versatile and excellent headphone amps.
