Re: Best Amp For Classic/hard Rock!!!!!!

What's your price range? what guitar do you use? in what venues would you play it? what tone are you trying to get? - Aerosmith sound nothing like Van Halen... so you'll need to be a little more specific.

Buying a Marshall Plexi and 4X12 cabinet might be a little too big and heavy for your needs... with the information that you gave us I don't thing anyone can make the right recomendation...

Re: Best Amp For Classic/hard Rock!!!!!!

Wow... ahh, I would start by researching how LOUD tube amps actually are before starting to talk about Marshall stacks. Slash and EVH play big stacks because they play big venues.

If you are just getting started with a tube amp you might want to keep it to 15 or 30 watts for home/gig use. It will still be TOO loud, trust me. Tube power is wayyyy different than solid state.

Re: Best Amp For Classic/hard Rock!!!!!!

It does sound like the general tone you're looking for is Marshall-esque. I agree with the above posters that 100 watts may likely be overkill -- even 50 watts may be too much.

If there's an amp out there that can give you that classic Marshall rock tone in a 15-to-20-watt package, I say start there.

Re: Best Amp For Classic/hard Rock!!!!!!

i can tell you that my stack collects dust while my combos are really active... i have been in a few bands and used my Stack maybe 5-6 times.. after that i started using my combo again as it is much easier to carry 3am in the morning packing up, the guitar sound will not overpower the band and PA, the soundman will mix you in the PA with the rest of the band for a balanced sound....

I love stacks too but a 100 watt head and a 4x12 is really insanely loud unless you are doing larger gigs... My stack almost never gets turned on at home.... I have the 5150 and 120 watts of tube madness means when my parents are home i can hardly get it halfway to 1 before they ask me to turn it off.. and crazy as it sounds i'm on the hunt for a 8ohm cab for my Canadian issue JCM 800....

overkill and useless i call 4x12's with 100 watt heads... but i still collect the dam things... but hardly use them... my C30 combo gets a lot more action

Re: Best Amp For Classic/hard Rock!!!!!!

DSL 201. 20 tube watts perfect for bedroom and band practice. It can push a 4/12 when need for gigs. There is alway micing and running through a PA. If you are going louder then a 50 watt JCM 900 combo would give you variety and hit those tones, just make sure it has el-34's.

Re: Best Amp For Classic/hard Rock!!!!!!

The new Marshall JVM sounds insanely good at low volume and has a great clean channel and reverb, go with a 2X12 cab over a 4X12. I got the Avatar 2X12 with Vintage 30's for $315.00 delivered.

ok , 100 watts of tube is a bit too much ,
WOULD ANYONE RECOMMEND THE DSL 50 WATT VERSION, WILL THIS SUIT MY TONE PREFERENCES AND STYLES LISTED!!

Re: Best Amp For Classic/hard Rock!!!!!!

The BEST amp would be something Marshall, 50 or 100 watts, mid 60s to early 70s IMHO. If you're asking what amp will get you close for less than four grand and keep the police away, I think you've got lotsa choices. Crate has the Palomino series, Vox has the Valvetronix, an old Univox U45b sounds like a 1X12 Marshall combo. Old Traynor amps and Univox gets you close if you're looking for high wattage like 50 or so. Make sure you don't get cheap with the speakers or the cabinet. A good Marshall voiced amp with a Carl Martin Plexitone is a nice way to go as well. I'm sure lotsa other people will have some great options for you.

i wouldn't mind getting a DSL 50 watter myself! But like JMLP above does with his JMV head i'd use it thru a 2x12 as well...

So if you could afford it i would say a 50 watt Marshall would be cool...

Sure, it would work. You will need a cab to go along with that head.

Hey there JimLP . . .

. . . where are those sound clips mate ???

I would love to hear that Monster !!! :yes11:

Even in this day and age of technology I still do not have a way to record anything! Just as well as I am not the person to show what this amp is capable of, try these. They are not mine!

Re: Best Amp For Classic/hard Rock!!!!!!

I'd suggest a JTM45/Bluesbreaker (30 watts) through greenback speakers. The JTM45 isn't as quite loud as a 50 watt plexi. I'd also consider the new Vintage Modern head at 50 watts and a master volume.

I play through a Marshall 4x12 cab all the time, for virtually everything! Long live the 1/2 stack!

There's several Marshall 4x12 cabs loaded with GB's. The 1960C cabs have modern cosmetics and grill clothes. The 1960x cabs have 70's cosmetics. The 1960TV is an extra tall angled top cab with 60's cosmetics. I like the straight cabs (B cabs)sound better, but most like the looks of the angled cabs (A cabs) looks better with a head on top.

A 2x12 cab is also okay if a 4x12 is too big. The Bluesbreaker is the JTM45 amp in a 2x12 combo format, featuring two GB's.

Re: Best Amp For Classic/hard Rock!!!!!!

The only clips that worked for me are these:

Each of them sounds fantastic! This isn't you playing, but it's your equipment?

No, the clips are made with the JVM head but not my equipment. I posted the links to the threads on The Gear Page, all the links should work from there.

yes, but IMO it'll sound cheap, just like every other current production marshall

if i were you i'd either get a plexi knockoff like the univox or traynor bassmaster, or one of those marshall jubilee 50/20's

as far as cabs, well, you could either go with g12h30's or v30's or a mix & probably be happy

personally i don't like the way all v30 cabs sound but that's up to you

my bassmaster should be here friday & i run emi wizards which are 75 watt versions of g12h30's, i'll let you know how it sounds

Re: Best Amp For Classic/hard Rock!!!!!!

what cab should i think about getting??

That is a huge topic and I recommend you get a ton of opinions and price each out. I think Avatar makes some good cabs for the prices and there are tons available on the used market. An Avatar with a G12H30/V30 or Governor/Wizard combo would do the trick to start IMO. There are tons of speaker combinations.

The DSL 2000 series has a lot of detractors. I would play through the head before purchasing. Let your ears be your guide. ;)

You are really just a few steps into a fairly lengthy process.
