1980 Marshall JMP MKII 50 watt 2203 into a Marshall 1960ax cab with greenbacks. Love it, nails that whole classic/hard vibe, and more with the right pedals.

It is basically a JCM 800 in a different box. They are the dogs bits when it comes to classic and hard rock. Its what these amps were built to do. I use a few boost/distortion pedals infront of mine, becuase to be fair, it hasn't got a ton of gain. Plenty for classic rock, but these amps are all about dynamics and headroom, they need to be turned up loud to sound thier best. So, when I want to get a bit heavier I give it a kick in the nads with a dirt box.

Re: Best Amp For Classic/hard Rock!!!!!!

Even in this day and age of technology I still do not have a way to record anything! Just as well as I am not the person to show what this amp is capable of, try these. They are not mine!

Re: Best Amp For Classic/hard Rock!!!!!!

I wouldn't say better necassarily, just different. For me, its just what I want.

touche

i just meant there are amps that give that old marshall vibe & have enough gain to not require pedals out there

jcm800's are great amps though, don't get me wrong

in fact every tube marshall is good up to when they started using SS distortion in the jcm900's

that's a sweet rig! that's what evh slash needs to look for, IMO. Heck, I'd jump on that if I had the dough and a deal.

A 50 Watt JCM800 (2204) is your best bet, IMHO. Like someone said above, it's what they were built to do. For the record, if you hit it with a slight gain boost on the front end, you can get a great tone without it being cranked. I run mine (stock) on 2 or below always, into a top cab of a stack, and it's perfect. For the record, I've started using Chinese pre tubes in this head. The current ones seem to be a bit higher gain and have great tone. I A/B'd them with JJ's, Tung Sol's (which I had already paid for and were in the head) and some NOS something or others my tech had for his personal use. The Chinese blew the others away. So much so that my tech sold his NOS pres on eBay.

BTW - I prefer the sound of an amp that's not so high gain (like a 2204) and hitting it in the front with an OD pedal. I don't know what it is, perhaps it's the sound of my pedals that I like. But I started running like this late last year and it's the best I've ever sounded.

Re: Best Amp For Classic/hard Rock!!!!!!

so , a jcm 800 with a pedal to boost it , what pedal would be recommended, i dont want to ruin the natural distortion of the amp though , will the pedals completely change it or just increase the amps natural distortion , i could just get a graphic EQ or an mxr 7 / 10 band eq, slash uses those for extra lead gain, so that might be a good bet instead of using a boss OD pedal , what do ya think??

You have tons of options for boosting the amp. Some pedals are designed as clean boosts, which act to preserve the natural tone of the amp. Others will color the tone slightly. The best bet is to try a few different pedals and see what suits your style and goals best. For Boss pedals, look at the BD-2, SD-1 and DS-1 -- each of these will require different sorts of tweaking. There's the trusty Tube Screamer, which will add some mids to the tone. Big, fun can o' worms you're opening. It's cool experimenting with boost/OD pedals.

Re: Best Amp For Classic/hard Rock!!!!!!

I use an SD-1 (Super Overdrive) and a Duncan Pickup Booster. Not together, though. Each pedal has a different voice and is used for different applications. The SD-1 is a more "Metal" OD, the P/U Booster is being used more as a clean boost type of OD, really adding, maybe, 2 or 3 dB to my input signal.

Word of advice, regardless of which pedal you go with, if you're using a 2204 (JCM800), use the pedal's OD conservatively. Otherwise, by OVER OD'ing the tone, you'll also compress all the life out of your sound.

i can't really see the sd-1 being a metal OD. A ds-1 with the level maxed i can see but not an sd-1, it has a tiny volume boost & not much gain to it at all

The mids on the SD-1 are perfect for that 80s Metal sound. Its got a tight bottom end and pretty cutting, but sweet highs, it just screams 80s metal to me, through my JMP. But thats not really the sound that I use, so my Rat and Big Muff get mroe use than the SD-1. I like distortions to colour the sound a bit.
