Best and worst Flangers out there

Re: Best and worst Flangers out there

The best flanger IMHO is the ADA. I understand they are pretty hard to find these days.

Re: Best and worst Flangers out there

My favorite flanger is a secret! ;) My second favorite is the TC Electronic SCF. Great flanger and just about zero noise. The A/DA mentioned above is also remarkable. I should've bought one when I had the chance! Now the prices are insane! :(

Re: Best and worst Flangers out there

umm of the big 3 (boss, ibanez and dod) I'd have to say the boss (bf-2) was the best. my second choice is the dod (FX75c). that one is a very chorusy flanger. in fact, if you turn the regen knob down, you get a chorus. the worst was the ibanez (CF-7). it sounded like the flange was just sitting on top of the main signal, not effecting the signal like it should. it was very high endy and the chorus wasn't that much to write about either. I sold it to fellow forum bro, Dooogz. He liked it a whole lot but it wasn't for me.

same here.... mine i bought in the 80's and have used it ever since....

I also have some Ibanez and DOD Flangers but the Boss is the one i like.

Re: Best and worst Flangers out there

I really scored when I found my late 70's ADA Flanger. The other bigtime classic is the Ibanez Flying Pan, which commands huge money. I've never tried one of those, but the ADA is way cool. Mine's a little beatup, but it works perfectly. A lot of people don't know it, but the circuit has a bunch of mini trim pots, to dial in every aspect of it. After buying mine, I opened it up and found the sweet spot on every trim pot, while listening very carefully. I don't over-use this effect, but it's really fun to play with. I like using it with the Line 6 Delay, to find some trippy underwater sounds.

Re: Best and worst Flangers out there

I like the flange on my Marshall Regenerator a lot, and my MXR reissue flanger was super cool. Those flangers are really the only ones I've liked enough to use.

Re: Best and worst Flangers out there

Yeah. I remember playing through a friend's BF-2 in high school. Since that was the 80's, it must have been an 80's (Japanese) model. But I don't like the newer ones....

Re: Best and worst Flangers out there

being a huge D.Gilmour fan i find really good the electro harmonix electric mistress.............i have to say though that EH could have paid more attention to same details like the volume drop when the pedal is activated.........

Re: Best and worst Flangers out there

I really like the EH Electric Mistress flanger, the original MXR flanger, the ADA Flanger and maybe 1 or 2 others but those 3 are my favs...

As for bad flangers, the MXR reissue is a turd Boss and DOD flangers have NEVER sounded good to me and to be honest the TC Electronics Chorus/Flanger they everyone seems to love and want one of is one of the worst sounding Flangers I ever tried.

Re: Best and worst Flangers out there

I've never really liked the traditional flanging sound, but for a lighter kind of effect I really liked the Boss HF-2 (High Frequency Flanger) that I tried . . . it's like a regular flanger but it only works on the high frequencies of your guitar signal. I thought it was cool. Bright pink though . . . rather unfortunate choice of colours . . .

If I had unlimited $$$, I'd own an ADA and/or MXR. As it is, I've had an MIJ black-knob Boss BF-2 on my board for years, and it sounds enough like what I want to make me happy. It's a bit noisy, but you only notice it when not playing, so I just make sure I switch it off when I stop playing.

Re: Best and worst Flangers out there

The original MXR Flanger ROCKED! I wish I still had it. My favorite now is another out-of-production model, the Boss BF-2b. Yes, the brown bass version of the BF-2. It's voiced a little warmer for bass and sounds really smooth with a guitar. I don't use it much anymore, pretty much just when fiddling at home.

The worst flanger I ever played was the Boss HF-2, their HiBand Flanger. It sounded like playing through a tin can and the sound was bouncing all over the place. Not pleasant to my ears.

Ugh... i know what you mean. All those odd-order harmonics and that tinny metallic sound is something I avoid like the plague.

Re: Best and worst Flangers out there

i like the old boss hf-2 i use mine only on bass or to get noises out of it on guitar wish there was a mod to make it a little more like the old bf-2

Re: Best and worst Flangers out there

I've got a vintage MXR Flanger, but I don't use it very much. Perhaps it's time to dust it off and find some tasty settings.

Maybe I should have mentioned that I liked it as a noise box . . . not necessarily as somthing that I'd use on my guitar on every song . . .
