I'd say build your own or buy the smallest tube amp there is. Sure, Line6 makes some emulating amps that are solid state, but alas I don't like how they sound.

Alternately, buy a Starforce amp (made in Korea). The voltage difference isn't accounted for (they just put a plug adapter on it) but it has a nice brown sound as a result LOL it's my practice amp.

This is half the power of the 1watt BuMBOX that i posted (and have major GAS for - THE BuMBOX that is !).

Yup, it is a 1/2 (half) Watt valve amp

Oh, and it is sooooo small, you can but it on your 2x12 cab, and some folks will think it is a pedal going into your cab . . .

The article sounds promising - any thought on this lil 1/2 watter folks ?

AND WHY DOES IT ONLY GET A MENTION ON PG.4 !!! ?

when I first read this thread the g-dec came to mind right away. I think its perfect for playing later in the night and its a good practice amp with the drum tracks. I bought a blues junior and I can get it quiet enough to play after I get off work, but I usually stop playing it at least by 7 or 8 oclock. Thats an option if your neighbors are pretty cool. After about 8 I'll switch over to my g-dec and use it. So I guess what I'm saying is keep the g-dec and get a bj and you'll be set. Throw a few pedals in front of the bj and you can get pretty close to the classic rock tones you want, plus if you want to get loud the bj will get pretty loud for a 15 watter.

ENGLs are well known for their low volume/good tone capability!But it is still an overkill..

Nothing is overkill as long as you can still get it inside your house.

The Screamer is really capable of sounding huge on lower volumes...impressed me a lot. You could check it out and you would own an amp which you can gig without issues too.

I was wondering about that. Appreciate your comment. The GDEC is a modeller also. I was kind of wondering if there's any way I can play at home without them. Somehow, don't know if I'll ever be taken seriously without exposure to "effects free" playing. Does that make any sense?

BTW, I'm predominantly a classic rock player.

If it's an "apartment" amp, volume is clearly an issue. Whatever tube amp you get, its best tone is gonna be linked to a particular volume. I favour solid state amps (analog or digital) where low volume is a requirement. I have a Tech 21 Trademark 60 (analog SS) that is a superb and versatile little amp. The Vox modelling stuff that other guys have mentioned is really cool too. Tube amps are great, but in my experience not ideally suited to environments where you need to 'turn that darn thing down'.
