"Best bang for the buck" semi-hollow?

I know, I know...personal preference and all - IYO: What would you pick? I prefer fat necks, large frets and my favorite radius (radii?) is 12". Shoot.

Korean made Hamer EchoTone. Wish I didn't have to sell mine. Damn sweet guitar. Just keep an eye out for them. No longer made but great deals used.

The preference for large necks is the only possible obstacle I see to getting a semi-hollow that is a big bang for the buck, and meets your preferences. There are tons of them out there that have 12" radius, and a fair number that have large frets (early '90's Epi Sheratons, for one). But I don't think I have ever played a budget semi-hollow that even had a medium-sized neck, let alone large. The exception would be older cheap U.S.A. guitars, like a Harmony Rocket, for instance. I had one of those with a nice and fat neck. They don't even come close to qualifying as bang for the buck, though. They are such utter pieces of ****, and they are no longer really affordable, especially after a refret and the electronics upgrades that are likely necessary by now.

PRS SE Custom Semihollow.

Buy used. Upgrade pickups, pots, selector switch and machineheads. Sorted.

What he said. I'm quite happy with my AS83... ( I think it's an 83... Violin brown, either way, nice touch of flame, good pickups, neck has a nice feel to it, and got it off eBay for $300 with a solid SKB flight case... I stole it from the poor bastard, really.)

If I were looking for a budget semi hollow right now, I'd probably go with Ibanez. The ones I've played have a good quality overall and sound good, even stock. Also, here in Brazil they're cheaper than Epiphones (by the way, the Ibanez that I've played were far better than the Epiphones that I've played - talking about semi hollows only)

Tough question. There are lot.

As with all things acoustic, the closer you get to pure acoustic, the more impact of wood and such, and variability increases.

Electrics - pretty homogeneous
Semi-holoow - more variable
Full hollow - lot's of variability
Acoustics - need to play them all; they vary far and wide - even expensive ones.

All that said - I bane has been impressive every one I've played (impressive does not mean amazing)
Still, there are a lot of good DOT's out there, and more Sheratons.

Play a bunch. Shouldn't be hard to find a good one.

For me it's Epi Dots hands down. The necks vary, and I have one in natural with a mahogany neck (most are maple) that's 1950's thickness, the thickest neck of any of my guitars. I think it's a mid 2000's manufacture. Sheratons cost more but you're just paying for gold hardware and bigger fret inlays.

Absolutely the Ibanez AS83/93/103/153 series. The AS53/73 are decent but more budget minded.

Re: "Best bang for the buck" semi-hollow?

I bought an Epi dot deluxe on sale and removed everything from the guitar and put over 1000 bucks into it and it is now a fine guitar I would put up against anything gibson has ever made.

I have a 185 Dot RI Gibson 335, a 2009(I think) Gibson 359 & last year I had a Canadian Builder build me a carved maple 335. Here is a pick of that IMG_0557.jpgIMG_0557.jpg

Re: "Best bang for the buck" semi-hollow?

I've always enjoyed my Epiphone Dot Deluxe Limited Edition.

+1. Those red Dot Deluxes are beautiful! Love the flame tops, gold hardware is a nice touch too. The retail is/was about $50 more than a regular Dot ($350 vs $300), and significantly less than a Sheraton, which have plain tops ($600). Most Dot Deluxes are brown sunburst, a small number are red, and a very few are natural. Most have dot fret inlays, but a few were made with small block inlays. Great guitar for the money.
