Best Bass Guitar Tone??

Re: Best Bass Guitar Tone??

Actually, now that I think about it, I think the bass I saw in the Green Day vid was a Ripper. I guess I don't know anyone that uses a Grabber.

Justin Chancellor from Tool . . . his name is justin isnt it? I was pretty sure it was. Anyway . .. what kind of bass does he use? Musicman?

He uses Wal basses. I think he used to use a Musicman.

Re: Best Bass Guitar Tone??

UGH! The lack of Tool knowledge around here is disgusting.... :laugh2:

When I saw Justin "Adam" Chancellor live, he definitely wasn't using a Music Man (it was a Wal). A handful of people said the EQ at that show was too bass-heavy, but I thought the experience as a whole was mind-altering. Yeah, great bass tone, but that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Some of my favorite players are Roger Waters, John Paul Jones, Duff McKagen, Chi Cheng, Steve Harris, Jason Newsted, Dee Dee Ramone, Krist Novoselic, David Ellefson, Mike Dirnt and Billy Sheehan. I love those guys for many reasons... one of which is tone.

I think Geddy Lee is WAY overrated. He can play with the best of him, but I don't like his extremely active-sounding bass tone and I don't think he's the pinnacle of bassdom. Also, Les Claypool is the MAN when it comes to chops and cool, idiosyncratic songwriting. His tone in and of itself, however, never impressed me.

by the way, killyourscene stop acting like you know everything, its really annoying.

Re: Best Bass Guitar Tone??

I'm not sure who it is... (Pops Popwell, I think) from the Jazz Crusaders. On tracks like "Spiral" and "So Far Away" (just two of my favorites) Smooth, funky, and punchy when need be. I love it.

I'm sure I didn't. I'm simply stating my opinon like everyone else. The comment about "Tool knowledge" was just me kidding. Hence, the laughing face.

Re: Best Bass Guitar Tone??

Cliff Burton definitely.

I'm also a massive Steve Harris fan. He's an awesome bassist, and has great tone, particularly on the Powerslave and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son albums.

I'd also add in Jon Myung and especially Ray Riendeau, a simply badass bass player who is sadly not appreciated as much as he should be.

Re: Best Bass Guitar Tone??

I'm gonna go with Danny Andriano from Alkaline Trio (not his Slapstick, solo effort or Tuesday tone) cuase he really cuts through Matt Skiba's guitar. Back before Glenn left the band, he really had to compete for low-end space, so he used an AmpegSVT&6X10 and a Jazz bass to cut, and it worked. Now-a-days with Derek Grant drumming, the sound Danny's getting is rediculously jazz-bassy, like he wants it to sound really flubby... ya know?

Another great toned bassist is Tim Payne from Thursday, his tone (back when he used a Warwick Thumb bass) was really in your face and still kept the backbone of the band together. It was cool, but now that he plunked down the cash for a Custom Shop Fender '59 P-bass and another fender (armed with badassII & qtr-pndr) his tone's gone kinda.... dull... ya know?

Dave Ellefson (Megadeth) and John Myung (Dream Theater) have the best rock bass tones I've heard yet

Re: Best Bass Guitar Tone??

Where on earth is all the love for REX BROWN??did all the pantera albums of the world just vanish like that?

That guy from RATM had good tone

Re: Best Bass Guitar Tone??

Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, +1 on GNR-era Duff McKagan, Geddy Lee, Flea, Nathan East, and the bass guy in Tool.

Re: Best Bass Guitar Tone??

Some of my favorites are Jack Bruce in Cream, John Entwistle circa Live at Leeds, Jaco, Steve Harris, Dusty Hill, Gerry McAvoy, and John Paul Jones.

Re: Best Bass Guitar Tone??

John Paul Jones, (Heartbreaker just kicks SOOOO much Ass)
Steve Harris is also just awesome
Roger Glover!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and I think the Dude From Audioslave has a KICKIN' bass tone

Re: Best Bass Guitar Tone??

Chi Cheng from the Deftones is one of my faves. He just has this wonderfully appropriate beefy tone that you feel and sense more than you hear at times. There's such a huge sound they use and the guy just knows where to fit in.

Tony Levin's much the same way...you sense it and feel it more than hear it sometimes. Listening to his stuff with Peter Gabriel is just transcendent. You don't notice it's there and when you do you spend half the time debating whether it's actually someone playing bass or something totally different and not trying to sound like that but accomplishing it.

Leah Randi hit me alot the same way, but she's alot more out front musically. Seeing her with Delerium was an affirmation of what a really good simple bass tone can do and how it can support the band as a whole.

Jim Anton, bass player for Jonny Lang I love his tone and playing. He makes these wonderful statements in songs like "A Quitter Never Wins" and it isn't until halfway into the song you realize how gorgeous sounding it is.

I still think Jeff Aments playing on the first Pearl Jam album is wildly underrated. It's out front but manages to carry the band. It's total theatrics and stunt playing at times, but it works for that album. It kills me that's it's all totally fretless.

Re: Best Bass Guitar Tone??

I may get flamed. But if it is tone I am going for my favorite bass sounds. Not the best playing. These are sounds I want out of a bass I am recording.

Ace Frehley on 2000 Man
Gene Simmons on UnHoly
Nikki Sixx on Wildside
Jaun Crousier (Ratt)? on Lay it Down

Re: Best Bass Guitar Tone??

Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse. Whether you like the band or the music, that man has mad skills and tone, especially live.
Marty Mendez of Opeth. His playing is very weird at times, but with lots of feel and his tone rocks.
