My favorite has always been Flea. I love Flea's bass tone. Victor Wooten gets some really nice tone, as well.

Stanley Clarke (after watching a video on him I switched to guitar), Dusty Hill (I learned how to play rock with this guy), Rick James (the reason I wanted to play bass), Cool from Cool and the Gang (this guy could groove), and I can't remember his name but the guy who played bass for The Charlie Daniels Band was awesome.

Many great people mentioned in this thread. I guess the only other player I'd add to the list would be Bruce Thomas.

Tony Levin's much the same way...you sense it and feel it more than hear it sometimes. Listening to his stuff with Peter Gabriel is just transcendent. You don't notice it's there and when you do you spend half the time debating whether it's actually someone playing bass or something totally different and not trying to sound like that but accomplishing it.
