best bridge Pickup for hard death/thrash metal sound?

Re: best bridge Pickup for hard death/thrash metal sound?

i think a dime or distortion would work well.

what amp rig?

Re: best bridge Pickup for hard death/thrash metal sound?

Yeah it depends a lot more on your amp and guitar than the pickups. Also there's a lot of different tones in the 'death/thrash' field...narrow it down for us and we can probably help.

Generally you need hi-output pickups and an OD pedal to get 'death' out of vintage tube amps. If your amp's got some gain in it already you could probably do with a vintage PAF-type pickup.

ATM i'd say a Bare Knuckle Warpig would be the ultimate pup for what you wanna play. All of what i've heard is beyond awesome and brutal/heavy as hell. IMO it's quite close to the Invader but more open and with a bit more top end.
I'll definitely have to get myself a set of warpigs.

Re: best bridge Pickup for hard death/thrash metal sound?

I used to play thrash/death metal stuff with my old band and I got a killer tone with just a Gibson Explorer (Stock 500T/496R), Marshall JCM900 and a Boss Metalzone to overdrive the amp.

...the guitar is my Gibson Explorer 76 Reissue played through Diezel Herbert and t.c.electronic G-force, E-flat tuning.
I think the Dimebucker could be the right choice, too, but i've never heard or played one.... what do you recommend for neck PU for screaming leads?
thanks guys!

Re: best bridge Pickup for hard death/thrash metal sound?

I have a Duncan Distortion in the neck of an H/S/H Strat and IMO it is very good for that, although it can be quite bassy at times. Maybe I should try the .001 cap mod.

Dimebucker, EMG 81, or Evolution. I'd go with the dimebucker since its not as bright as the Evo and sounds unique.

Try a Bill Lawrence L-500XL (what Dime played prior to the Dimebucker). Very tight, articulate, and cleans up well despite its high output.

I have the emg81 and the duncan distortion and i also play thrash/death metal. The emg will make death style palm muted chords sound really 3d thick and awesome. Whereas the distortion is similar, it has more note seperation and is probably better for thrash. They both are very tight though, but in different ways.

I have a Dean ML Undertaker w/ a basswood body and an Invader in the bridge. I pipe that into a Peavey JSX (ruthless metal tone machine) and a Behringer parametric eq and I can get any tone from thrash to the heaviest death tone you can think of. Watch the capacitor on the tone pot 'cause I had to change the .047 micro farad to a 2200 pico farad to take out the 31 Hz muddy poop!

to play those styles, EMG81, Duncan Distortion or Gibson 500T are my favorites
