Best cheap amp head?

Hello everyone,

I was just wondering what you guys think is the best amp head for the price. I'm looking at upgrading my amplification, but I am on a student budget. If you guys have any ideas, please post them.

Thanks,
Phil

Re: Best cheap amp head?

I really like the Sovtek Mig 50...especially used...and especially after putting some GREAT tubes in it.

They're going for about $350 - 450. used on Ebay...if you're patient, you can score one for about $350. I'm surprised...I thought they were less than that.

But they're basically the 5F6-A '59 tweed Bassman circuit (which Marshall copied to create the JTM-45 and Plexi models) with a solid state rectifier instead of a 5AR4 tube like the tweed Bassman used.

I too am looking into this being a student, and from what Ive seen is that behringer is putting out clones for the peavy xxx and 6505. Not sure how they will compare, but they will be a whole crapload cheaper than the peavy ones.

Re: Best cheap amp head?

With the cab, I was thinking anything under 1500$ would be good. I am totally willing to go used.

Re: Best cheap amp head?

I just played a Peavey Windsor and it blew me away. awesome classic Marshall tone and vibe....for only $399 brand-new :smokin: if I didn't already have more amps than I need I would have bought it on the spot.

Re: Best cheap amp head?

Under 1500.00 you can find a killer 1/2 stack. What kinda tones you looking for?

You could likely snatch up a JCM 800 1/2 stack with some clever looking. Laney AOR with room for more toys... There are a ton of options......

Re: Best cheap amp head?

I totally checked out the Windsor online. It seems smoking! I really like the whole vintage vibe going on. I guess I will have to go check that out at my local store this week end. If anybody else has any ideas, please do tell.

What model would those be?

Re: Best cheap amp head?

As far as sound is concerned I really dig that old school vintage rock sound. I play alot of zeppelin, pink floyd, hendrix...that kind of stuff.

Marshall come to mind, as soon as i hear Led Zeppelin.

There are other Britt-voiced heads out there too - let me think for a sec.

Man, those all look like fine options. I'm gonna have to bring my guitar to the stores and be trying out some amps soon. :smokin:

Yeah, right.

A, like the Peavey's are expensive as is.
B, It's Behringer. 'Nuff said.

For $1500, you can get a KILLER rig! I just re-did my halfstack rig, and got a JSX and Mesa 4x12 for a whopping $1300.

Re: Best cheap amp head?

With a budget like that, my interest would be in a Vox AC30 head with either a Tone Tubby or Ear Candy cab.
