Best cheap strat to mod?

If I wanted to buy a cheap strat to modify what's my best option? Not sure where the sweet spot is.

Will probably put a P-rails HH in it.

Re: Best cheap strat to mod?

If you're looking at new ones, the Squier CVs are tough to beat, and I believe that they're HSH routed.

Re: Best cheap strat to mod?

If you're just looking to learn then go cheap and get a Bullet. If you want a real good keeper then the CV line.

The bad news is that you'll probably never recover your investment if you're looking to turn it over..

Re: Best cheap strat to mod?

The new Strat CVs are HSS, at least the one I got (50s), I had to have it routed before I put my HH setup in. I think the new Squier CVs are pretty kickass.

Squire Afinnity without question.
I am doing my cheapest ever mod. I got a Squire Affinity body off a forumite. Its an Alder body..god only knows how many pieces..mayu just as well be Playwood probably. Its full size, but a littel more thin than a MIM bosdy. Good news is Mexican Strat hardware will fit on it.
heres a Spy pic of the soon to bve compated project;

Re: Best cheap strat to mod?

Looks like you've had a pint too much today.

Pint *this d-head :);

*Custom Color awesome and dare I say it-rare- British racing color Squire Affinity body. I needed a platform for my super high output 42 gauge 10K+ Strat pickup set w/ Duncan SSL-6 RW/RP middle pickup.
Its gonna be a weak re-presentation of Fenders 25K Jaguar Strat.
I've always loved Jags.
This is just an example of why I recommend the Affinity, and not tooting my own horn.
I'll post a full thread after its done.

Find a 90s Peavey Predator, those are fantastic.

They are good. They are very good, but "Fantastic"? No.I have one. Necks are righteous when a whole lot of set up work is done. Even then, unless you can deal with very very small almost fretless wonnder frets, then you'll be ahgast at the ridiculous neck.
Everone is bonkers cause they have a 12" radius.
Every single part needs upgrading? Do YOU know how to upgrade the cheap tonesucking block? I do.I also know how to upgrade the cheap azz cast saddles. I've done my homework, but you haven't, and you are willing to let these things exist on your Predator , and still say its "fantastic", and that means you are a fraud IMO.

Tuners are junk..neck needs extensive set up work..neck profile is bizarre.
If you can set it up perfectly like I did, its a great guitar, only because of the huge slab of Poplar..but 20 years is barely enough for that hunk of furniture grade Poplar lumber to begin to open up sonically ..still , its a massive slab, and IF you change out the pickguard and pickups and electronics besides everything else, the guitar plays and sounds very good, and all that said, Im selling mine on ebay now. Fun experiment on polishing a turd- I got mine pretty shiney!

IMO that era of peavy guitar were some of the biggest junk ever made...but you are right, wiht extensive mods they are halfway decent IF the crummy necks don't twist on you.Thta fat slab of furniture Poplar is the only thing going for it IMO.Its relatively tone dead, but has potential after it has aged these last 20 years.

MIM Strats. Best bang for the buck still. And they're useful right out of the box, so you can take your time with the mods.

That was from a Squier Standard actually, not an Affinity!
It was a Guitar Center special!

Re: Best cheap strat to mod?

I'd say a used MIM or Squier Classic Vibe are good choices. MIJ Fenders are even better, but a bit more expensive.

I upgraded everything on it. The neck is actually something I really like on it. I think its worth it to strip all the crap hardware on it and put new stuff on it. This is a thread about modding right??? Really you'd have to replace the hardware on a Squier too, so I'm not sure why you're even bringing it up.

I ordered a prewired guard from Dragonfire Guitars, with a Dragonfire Scream pickup. I know they're Korean made, but I didn't have alot to spend and they do live up to their name.

I forget what model it was, but its a Wilkinson bridge and Fender Vintage tuners.

So yes, it does sound "fantastic" I'm very happy with the mods I made to it. And you can find these things all over. I was lucky enough to get mine for free from a coworker.

Heres a good article I found on modding them.

Re: Best cheap strat to mod?

Nice result

Whilst more superstrat than Strat, the Yamaha Pacificas have been the base of many a mod.
