If I wanted to buy a cheap strat to modify what's my best option? Not sure where the sweet spot is.
Will probably put a P-rails HH in it.

Looks like you've had a pint too much today.
Find a 90s Peavey Predator, those are fantastic.
Pint *this d-head;
*Custom Color awesome and dare I say it-rare- British racing color Squire Affinity body. I needed a platform for my super high output 42 gauge 10K+ Strat pickup set w/ Duncan SSL-6 RW/RP middle pickup.
Its gonna be a weak re-presentation of Fenders 25K Jaguar Strat.
I've always loved Jags.
This is just an example of why I recommend the Affinity, and not tooting my own horn.
I'll post a full thread after its done.

They are good.They are very good, but "Fantastic"? No.I have one. Necks are righteous when a whole lot of set up work is done. Even then, unless you can deal with very very small almost fretless wonnder frets, then you'll be ahgast at the ridiculous neck.
Everone is bonkers cause they have a 12" radius.
Every single part needs upgrading? Do YOU know how to upgrade the cheap tonesucking block? I do.I also know how to upgrade the cheap azz cast saddles. I've done my homework, but you haven't, and you are willing to let these things exist on your Predator , and still say its "fantastic", and that means you are a fraud IMO.
Tuners are junk..neck needs extensive set up work..neck profile is bizarre.
If you can set it up perfectly like I did, its a great guitar, only because of the huge slab of Poplar..but 20 years is barely enough for that hunk of furniture grade Poplar lumber to begin to open up sonically ..still , its a massive slab, and IF you change out the pickguard and pickups and electronics besides everything else, the guitar plays and sounds very good, and all that said, Im selling mine on ebay now. Fun experiment on polishing a turd- I got mine pretty shiney!
IMO that era of peavy guitar were some of the biggest junk ever made...but you are right, wiht extensive mods they are halfway decent IF the crummy necks don't twist on you.Thta fat slab of furniture Poplar is the only thing going for it IMO.Its relatively tone dead, but has potential after it has aged these last 20 years.
