If you can build a better mousetrap, build it. Or, in guitar terms, if you can build an equivalent guitar, do so. Don't steal the other guy's name.
That can be said for music, as a whole, really.

That's a really sad ending to the story. My friend was on vacation in Florida and his girlfriend's BIL walks in with a Gibson Black Beauty he got at a yard sale for $450-500. The sent me a picture and I instantly said it was a fake. They argued with me for an hour and looked up the serial number which was legit (but not stamped correctly). Finally, I told them to open the control cavity and ...boom! They knew it wasn't a Gibson. They took it back and told the woman it was a fake. She apologized and said she didn't know it was a bootleg and refunded them. They drove around the block and five minutes later she had it back on the lawn for the same price.
I have a Gibson Les Paul Studio satin that might as well have come from Ali Express. Can't gig all night on it or do abusive boomer bends, but it's a great platform to test pickup combinations.
I have a Les Paul Tribute which isn't far off from a Studio satin, and I have absolutely zero issues with it other than the neck profile isn't really my preference.I had been meaning to try that model out, but it sounds like I shouldn't bother.

I have yet to see a Chibson that confuses me wether it's real or not. They've all got a bunch of stuff that's a little off where if you look at it as a whole, it just looks way off.
Biggest telltale is usually the bridge with the large posts.
The thing that first caught my eye was the gold on the bridge, pickups and tuners were 3 radically different shades of gold.

But tonally, I would put it against anything. Every pickup I try in it sounds fantastic. I'd probably say the same thing about the playability if the neck profile was more to my liking. But it's plek'd, so the action is nice and low without buzz. No issue with it staying in tune either, but I did replace the tuners.
It's also my lightest guitar, so it's very gig-friendly in that regard.
This guitar screamed fake

That neck (and the plating) looks pretty bad. What else is off on the guitar? I am no expert here, so I am looking for some very obvious stuff from People Who Know what to look for.
