Close minded Ed doesn't play well with others. IDK i could be wrong.
Men & women have fought & died for authentic Americana because its important and it matters.
To suggest "nobody cares" is a failing grade.

The vast majority of the audience aren't musicians and can't tell the difference between guitars.

A while ago I bought a rosewood Telecaster, with agreement from my wife. Later I was playing my old SG Standard that I bought before we were married and she said, "Is that your new guitar?"

My friend was on vacation in Florida and his girlfriend's BIL walks in with a Gibson Black Beauty he got at a yard sale for $450-500. The sent me a picture and I instantly said it was a fake. They argued with me for an hour and looked up the serial number which was legit (but not stamped correctly). Finally, I told them to open the control cavity and ...boom! They knew it wasn't a Gibson. They took it back and told the woman it was a fake. She apologized and said she didn't know it was a bootleg and refunded them. They drove around the block and five minutes later she had it back on the lawn for the same price.
That's a really sad ending to the story.

I have yet to see a Chibson that confuses me wether it's real or not. They've all got a bunch of stuff that's a little off where if you look at it as a whole, it just looks way off.

Biggest telltale is usually the bridge with the large posts.

I have a Gibson Les Paul Studio satin that might as well have come from Ali Express. Can't gig all night on it or do abusive boomer bends, but it's a great platform to test pickup combinations.
I had been meaning to try that model out, but it sounds like I shouldn't bother.
I have a Les Paul Tribute which isn't far off from a Studio satin, and I have absolutely zero issues with it other than the neck profile isn't really my preference.

But tonally, I would put it against anything. Every pickup I try in it sounds fantastic. I'd probably say the same thing about the playability if the neck profile was more to my liking. But it's plek'd, so the action is nice and low without buzz. No issue with it staying in tune either, but I did replace the tuners.

It's also my lightest guitar, so it's very gig-friendly in that regard.

My Dad has a friend in Florida they're well off. The friends son has a guitar "collection" kinda sorta. He's a wannabe player but can't really play.
Anyhoo my Dad sent me some pic's of the friends son's guitars. Most were all Chinese fakes including a doubleneck SG.
Swear to God i wanted to say something but i figured it would hurt the guy as my Dad said he "paid alot of money".
Ripping people off is a crime and so is flooding the market with fake guitars.
I cant believe in 2025 we are having this conversation where most here are the "internet generation" and all this info is public.

The thing that first caught my eye was the gold on the bridge, pickups and tuners were 3 radically different shades of gold.

Doesn't that make it authentic? At least that's how Gibson plastics are. My '94 Standard came with tan binding, pink pickup rings, pee yellow pickguard, beige switch tip, blue inlays and snot green tuners. Of course, now after 30 years they kinda all match.

Well, that makes them sound a lot better. I will put them on my list to check out.

That neck (and the plating) looks pretty bad. What else is off on the guitar? I am no expert here, so I am looking for some very obvious stuff from People Who Know what to look for.

Knob position is another item. See the treble volume - the bottom of that knob should not overlap with top of the rhythm volume. Treble vol should be more close to the bridge than the stop.

  • Bridge has the wider posts like on Epis and most other Asian guitars.
  • The spacing between the bridge and the bridge pickup seems wider than what you normally see on Gibsons
  • The pickup rings are wider like on Epis.
  • The toggle switch has a washer like non-Switchcraft Asian switches.
  • The headstock shape is off.
  • The lower horn's shape is also off.
Also, for some reason, many people who own Chibsons tend to not care how their guitars look in photos. Many of them are pretty poorly taken like that pic where the focal point of the photograh is the chair, not the guitar, LOL. I think it's funny, but I do feel it's kinda common, which I gess fits with the whole untrimmed strings aesthetic.
