Best Distortion Pedal?

For the Kurt Cobain sound?

I own a DS-1, which gets me there, but I'd like to experiment.

i know he had a DS-1 and later a DS-2, and supposedly an MXR distortion+

I'd be running this into the clean channel of a Fender tube amp.

Re: Best Distortion Pedal?

owning a few DS1's new and old, plus a DS2 they all sound teh same to me... The DS1's get a bad rap... they can sound great infront of the right amp... in front of some amps they sound too thin... in front of a different amp the same pedal can sound great...

for a $40 pedal how can ya go wrong...

Re: Best Distortion Pedal?

I bought a ds1 a couple of months ago with the intention of having it modded by Keeley. I sent it off and it came back perfectly modded. It was a mistake because it came back too smooth and tubscreamer like. I sold it and plan on picking up a stock ds1 again sometime soon.

I have tried the vintage ds1. I cannot tell one bit of difference between vintage and new. $39 at most places. It works great with my jcm800. My advice is dont get it modded unless you want something totally different. It will not sound the same after. The only drawback to the stock ds1 is the tone knob is kind of limited in use but it does not matter because you only need to tweak the amp and leave the tone at noon.

Re: Best Distortion Pedal?

You mean he didn't use the DOD Grunge?: party:

Re: Best Distortion Pedal?

I don't mind the DS-1 stock. It's fizzy but still kinda cool.

I have a modded one that sounds Marshall-y and it's pretty kickass.

do the diference between the ds-1 and ds-2 isnt enough to justify buying one, if I own a ds-1?

Re: Best Distortion Pedal?

He only used the DS-2 on the 1 setting and preffered the DS-1. I don't mind the ds-1 but I think stock it needs the right amp and guitar to get this kinda tone. I love my modded one with single coils and vox style amps but stock it is too harsh in that setup. Don't forget he also had a mesa preamp in the studio at some point and lots of other stuff and his clean tone has a a certain sound that sounds good with a ds-1 on it but might not be something you always want as clean. (On nevermind he used an ac30 for some of the clean stuff which sounds a lot better then the stuff he was using with the ds-1 clean)

Re: Best Distortion Pedal?

My cousin actually uses a big muff for the kind of music you seem to be getting into. It sounds to me pretty sweet in a gross, sort of grungy way.

I'd be playing a Jaguar with a high output bridge humbucker into the DS-1, into a flanger into a fender tube amp. save for a few things, this is basically his setup. I didn't do it on purpose, i've have the jag for longer than ive been into learning nirvana.

you know... since I already own the DS-1...maybe I should be after the big muff.

Its a really sort of indescribable sound. Its got the low mids of a marshall, but like all distorted and fuzzy like a fuzz pedal. And thick, man is it thick. Not useful for everything IMO, but still pretty damn cool.

Re: Best Distortion Pedal?

I think he only used the Boss stuff very briefly in the early days... his main dirt box by the time of the Nevermind tour & onwards was a Sans Amp, the original one with all the DIP switches. He also had a rack with a Boogie preamp & solid state power amps... Crest? Crown? One of 'em...

Re: Best Distortion Pedal?

i thought he used a JMP-1..?
i've seen live footage of him using one.

Re: Best Distortion Pedal?

Tell me if you agree with me on this one: Some ******bag on youtube said "i think its funny people are refering to Kurtsgear.com, since that site hasnt been updated in a long time"...

and here I am thinking, what, has Kurt's rig changed since 2002?
