Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

Thank you for this poll! Ive always felt the Distortion motto should be "Sh6:Arrive Metal." First time i tried i felt i had finally cleared the Mehtull Portal entirely.

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

I was an EMG die hard until recently when I got an SG standard and didnt wanna deal with trying to cram all of that solderless crap into it. I got a set of DDs and I'm in love.

OT but yea, that solderless crap is supposed to make it easier, but I had the same experience- turned out to be more of a pain in the ass and hardly any room in there. I ended up wiring it "the old-fashioned way"!

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

Between the Distortion, JB, Dimebucker, Bill Lawrence Keystone L500, Gibson 500T, and EMG-81s at 9 & 18 volts that I have played, the Duncan Distortion TB-6 is my favorite.

The EMG-81 at 18 volts and Dimebucker get honorable mention, but they lack the throaty sound the Distortion has to my ears. All three are usable pickups that I currently have installed in various guitars though.

i change my vote to full shred with a ceramic swap.

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

i never really liked using a high gain pickup for a distorted sound, always went back down. i don't find as much clarity in them. one of my favorites as far as a metal tones goes though would have go be the PG-8. heck, even the stock pearly gates is good for metal. just listen to some early system of a down;)

That does seem to have the throatiness I would expect from a Distortion! I approve! Full Shred with ceramic is a nice concept...

Nice tone! nice sound!

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

Kinda zombie thread, not THAT old but kinda.

Of the choices above I choose Alt 8 which absolutely RIPS in my Washburn MG-104 but I also think this poll is flawed without the Custom series pickups...

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

I love the Alt 8, tho I aim for a pretty mid-heavy sound. Nothing else has that lower mid punch to it. I like the Full Shred 7s, tho they can get a little dark.

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

I love the JB and do not seem to have the issue with the low end the way so many others do - in any of the guitars I have used it in. Weird, but true.

However, for those that like the JB but want to take it a step further, the bridge model of the Dave Mustaine Livewires is fast becoming my favorite pickup. Good output, very good string definition and clarity. Much more full sounding than an EMG 81.

For me and my uses, it's just a wonderful pickup. Yeah, it's an active, but I'm amazed at the sounds I can dial in with it.

Worth a try for any JB lovers.
