Best guitar to mod.

Hey. I'm thinking of buying a cheap guitar and modding it. What guitar would you think would be the best to mod. I'm considering a squire telecaster.

Re: Best guitar to mod.

A swimming pool routed Squier or asian made strat. Perhaps a mex febder if you can get it cheap? But a swimming pool rout will be best for playing around with mods. Cut your own pickguards and you're set

Re: Best guitar to mod.

Any Strat (with a swimming pool). The top loading electronics means you can pretty much fit a lot of interesting stuff under that pickguard and all you need is something to cut the pickguard to your liking. If it's nothing too crazy, you can probably get it precut. Hardtail gives you more options to rout out a bridge of your choosing, but in that case I'd just get a custom body routed for it from the very beginning.

If you get a Squier, try to get a Classic Vibe.

Re: Best guitar to mod.

Another vote for stratocaster. Squiers are nice, my advice is play it first, make sure it feels somewhat good and resonates well, then start modding!

Re: Best guitar to mod.

Strat or Tele. Easily the best guitars to mod.
A Telecaster would be cheaper too, since there's a bit less components: Only two pickups and the tremolo piece is simpler.

+1 on this. Avoid the cheaper Squiers with the plywood bodies.

Re: Best guitar to mod.

I'd say any strat that sounds good from the beginning. No mods will help to make it a superb instrument if the inherent tonal characteristis are poor.

Re: Best guitar to mod.

Check out older MIA Peaveys. They can be found for a song. Solid, well-built USA guitars. They respond to mods very nicely.

Good point Artie, glad you mentioned those!

that would depend.. i have one albeit a ~20 year old one and i would put it up against a sub 1200 dollar stock.. off the shelf guitar any day of the week. really depends on the guitar and the parts you put in one ,as good "tone" wood guitars can sound like **** too ..

highly modded squire with a nice neck.. hard combo to beat..

would prefer if an alder body but not for the reasons most would say.. . fuker ways double of what my dinky way.. atleast it feels that way.. I bought the guitar specifically for the color so it could be modded

Re: Best guitar to mod.

I'd side with your Tele idea first as you can get the wiring package off and do all kinds of mods without even loosening the strings on a Tele.

Re: Best guitar to mod.

The best for me are guitars with twin HB's and 4 knobs. Lots you can do with PU's, magnets, push-pulls, wirings, etc. Forget all this Strat/Tele foolishness.

Re: Best guitar to mod.

Wire a pickup and output jack into a piece of wood. String a few strings over a bridge of some kind and hammer some frets in.

In all seriousness though, I like ArtieToo's idea of an old Peavey. Those were nice guitars back in the day. If you can find a swimming pool rout Strat, go for it. My personal preference would be an Epiphone Les Paul that plays nice, but the most important thing is whether or not you like how it plays and feels.

Re: Best guitar to mod.

Why do you want to modify a guitar to begin with? Is there a particular sound/setup that you can't find elsewhere for sale? Do you just want to tinker?

My experience (after an awful lot of modifying guitars) is that it's best to buy the guitar that needs the minimum modification to give you what you want.

Re: Best guitar to mod.

I would think to just tinker on then something like a Les Paul. Don't have to remove the pickguard and you can usually find something dirt cheap. If you want to try a different neck then something bolt on like a cheap Strat.

And +1 to the "why"...what are you trying to accomplish?

Re: Best guitar to mod.

Downside of a Tele is you're limited on pickup options. For modding and experimenting a swimming pool routed strat really the best. You can put what ever pickup/control combos you want just need to cut a new pickguard
