Well, my fave would be either Satch or SRV, depending on my mood. To say satriani does not put emotion into his songs is crap.
And I am going to defend the Hammet / hetfield choice. They are not the greatest ever, and I have hated their music for a while now, but move back to ride the lightning. kill em all. Hetfield was the best at what he did, and Hammet did what was needed in those songs. The combo of the 2 was / is pretty strong. Their songwriting has gone to crap, but.....

Glad I don't really have to pick on... IMO the best plyer is probably a 17 year old sitting at his father garage and is a few years away from turnning into a law student because the guitar won't make you rich.

I think kirk hammet and james hetfield are highly under rated.

I wouldn't call them the best guitarist ever, considering almost no one I care for is on the list.

I would have voted Slash, but meh, he's too full of himself for what talent he has to offer.

His ego FAR outweighs his talent.

His ego FAR outweighs his talent.

He deserves the ego. Anyone who can play guitar riffs like that (which aren't over the top like Vai or Satch or any 'shredders') in the neck position, while wearing a top hat and sunglasses, while smoking a cigarette, while putting up with Axl AND wearing tight pants is EASILY the best guitarist ever.

He deserves the ego. Anyone who can play riffs like that without the ego is even better.
