I'm ata loss too...I cannot believe Beck didn't make it into the poll, he is the oft neglected member of Rock's big 4 (hendrix, clapton, page, and beck).

SRV should be there too.

However, although I would never consider any of them the best, my faves and the ones who sounds the best TO ME are in my sig. Most of them have a very diverse or unique style and can pull off multiple styles if need be (though many have been copied by younger guitarists and dont get the credit they deserve..cough...kirk hammet trying to rip off alot of Michael Schenker's style...cough cough)

They also (arguably for Yngwie, I know) pull off very soulful melodic playing or killer chops...bluesy or jazzy, or classical, or fusion-esque. Melting it all into the hard rock styles I like.

I dont understand why some of you think like this... I'm probably gunna get badly ass f**ked for saything this but just because Satch, Vai, EVH and the other guitarists I named before are shredders it doesn't mean they don't believe or put emotion into their music.. just because you can play fast it doesn't mean your music has no feeling or "soul".

I believe that shredding is just another way for a guitarist to express themselves, and just because Satch and Vai can play fast it doesn't mean they have to.. and in alot of songs they dont. I think shredding gives these guitarists a level of expression that alot of blues guitarits can't access, and because these guys can play both blues (Vai has covered Hendrix tracks) and shred I deffinatly think they have more to offer than the blues guitarists.

And even if these guys don't put "emotion" into their songs (Which i beleive they do) then a bloke like Vai could easily play any song Hendrix ever wrote.. hes technically superior, has an unsurpassed level of theory knowledge, can play many styles.. the only thing he doesn't do is play mainstream music.. Anyway... let the flaming begin...

There is no best, only personal favorites. Mine would be Larry Carlton, Chuck Loeb, Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Herring, and Mike Stern.

first of all I have no interest in flaming you...but you said yourself exactly what makes people like Vai so unappealing to people(at least me). You said he can play any hendrix song because he is technicaly superior and has an 'unsurpassed' level of knowledge. Since when was Hendrix known for technicality and a complete understanding of theory(a completely untraditional understanding)? Are you understanding what I'm getting at? 'Technicaly' the shred guys are the best players, but true guitar playing(like hendrix) is just about the opposite of technicality. Peace man

No one even comes close to Allan Holdsworth. Listen to any of the above and then listen to Allan. Play any of the above and then play Allan. Instead of wasting time listen to Countdown on "None Too Soon", then come back and post. It should only take 3 minutes.

I dunno if he's the BEST but I voted for Jimi Hendrix because I think he was the most creative of those listed.

Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, BB King and Eric Clapton would be the guys who influenced my playing the most.

Django Reinhardt is a big influence too.

But I'd say the most influencial was probably Hendrix, he just revolutionized guitar into what it is today.

JB is not even on the list but he can just do SO much with a guitar...he did crazy feedback and whammy both before AND after Hendrix, he did jazz/fusion, power trio rock, funk, blues, Rockability, techno...face it, the man does it all...and in my book he is The Best!

Nobody today does it and has been doing it as long as Jeff Beck....I have even heard a tune where Satch copied Jeff Beck...This guy can play any style..

I couldn't have said it better When it comes to style, technique, feeling and TONE!........there is only one name comes to my mind that already did everything before anyone else......JEFF BECK. Pure genius. That's all about i can say.

Agreed! Marty is unbelievable...im listening to forclosure of a dream now, has gotta be one of the best solos ever!

Ive got so many favourites its hard to pick one who i think is best...so im gonna choose who out of them i would pick to have their abilities if i had the choice...and that would be Wes hands down! ....although if Larry Carlton was up there i may be torn :dunce:

I almost voted for EJ, but then I saw the LP option. Gotta go with the guy who revolutionized the industry with the first signature solidbody, invented multi-track recording, has effects units that are still amazing years after their invention, etc.

I have to agree with the previous post that questioned the validity of threads like these. It's not a fair comparison when you compare such vastly different styles/approaches, and for that matter, how do you determine who's "best?"
