Re: Best high gain amp with Marshall distortion and GREAT cleans?
It's been said by some that the JCM 2000 TSL/DSL 100 had the best cleans of any Marshall when it was released fifteen years ago. I've only used the the TSL 100, a JCM 900 and a JVM for any length of time, and I'd agree that it has the best cleans, but then it's crunch channel is a bit bright and modern sounding, it doesn't make me think classic British the way the JCM 900 or the JVM do. They're not at an age where people consider them classics / nostalgia inducing, so they can be had for relatively cheap. If you use the virtual power reduction, it will lose some of the brightness, compress more and sound a lot more classic. Another nice feature is the "deep" button which removes the low end attenuation they typically put on a guitar amp to prevent it from sounding boomy, and that puts you into the bass guitar's territory, which is nice if you don't have a bass player on hand, or if you have a bass player that you'd just as soon drown out with root notes. The TSL 100 has two usable crunch channels, they call one of them lead, but I used it for rhythm all the time.
