Best high gain amp with Marshall distortion and GREAT cleans?

Re: Best high gain amp with Marshall distortion and GREAT cleans?

I'm looking to get another amp...in addition to my Soldano Hot Rod Plus. I love the amp I've got....but.....the clean channel isn't all it could be. So...I'm looking for a good high gain amp with Marshall like distortion and GREAT Fenderesque distortion. I've got up to $2K to drop if need be.
Any and all suggestions welcome.

I've been looking at the Rivera Knucklehead...but there's no local dealers around unfortunately.

why not buy a marshall jcm? very good cleans and obviously you'll get the Marshall distortion. Or...look into a Bogner or Laney. Engl is known to have some very nice cleans as well...

jcm doesnt have fender cleans at all. i like the sound of a clean marshall but it sure isnt fendery

Definitely needs an aftermarket amp or mod to a Marshall. I've heard some great Marshall mods that fix clean channel good.

So many Marshall type amps out there that already have the great cleans. I have no problems picking a different brand than Marshall to get Marshall tones.

You can try this to add a nice clean channel to your high gain amp

We get it; you like your Bad Cat.

Bad Cat is NOT the ticket. I love Marshall and that's why I sold my Hot Cat. The cleans aren't Fender, they're more Matchless than anything. The distortion won't get near as compressed, sustain as much, or be as thick as a Marshall.

A Bad Cat Hot Cat sounds like a Matchless because it essentially is a Matchless HC/SC/DC-30.

I always hated Rivera amps. I mostly live on Bogners these days.

I've never been able to get along with Riveras. I was able to dial in killer tones on one once, but wasn't able to duplicate it the following day or any other time I tried. For the best Fender / Marshall compromise in one, I'd recommend a Bogner XTC (ideally) or Shiva.

Re: Best high gain amp with Marshall distortion and GREAT cleans?

It's been said by some that the JCM 2000 TSL/DSL 100 had the best cleans of any Marshall when it was released fifteen years ago. I've only used the the TSL 100, a JCM 900 and a JVM for any length of time, and I'd agree that it has the best cleans, but then it's crunch channel is a bit bright and modern sounding, it doesn't make me think classic British the way the JCM 900 or the JVM do. They're not at an age where people consider them classics / nostalgia inducing, so they can be had for relatively cheap. If you use the virtual power reduction, it will lose some of the brightness, compress more and sound a lot more classic. Another nice feature is the "deep" button which removes the low end attenuation they typically put on a guitar amp to prevent it from sounding boomy, and that puts you into the bass guitar's territory, which is nice if you don't have a bass player on hand, or if you have a bass player that you'd just as soon drown out with root notes. The TSL 100 has two usable crunch channels, they call one of them lead, but I used it for rhythm all the time.

Wow, the hate must be pretty deep to dig up a 10 year old thread LOL!
