Best High Gain distortion pedals

Yes this has probably been done before. But I am looking for suggestions of the best high gain distortion pedals. No metal zone hear but really chugga chugga drop-d stuff and good lead sounds. I am not taking overdrive, not even close I love my Jeckyll and Hyde, but I want more distortion than that.

Any suggestions? If you suggest a V-twin, how do you get one.

Off course these are pedals that you use infront of a clean amp.

Re: Best High Gain distortion pedals

one of my favourite High Gain distortion pedals is a Diamond Fireburst.... made out of high quality parts and very low noise for a high gain unit!!!

The distortion itself is kind of in BOSS DS1 range of sounds but a hell of a lot better!!!! More EQ and less noise for sure... a lot better low end...

Re: Best High Gain distortion pedals

The MD-2 is basically the DS-1 with more gain, output and tone shaping options, totally better imo.

Re: Best High Gain distortion pedals

It's hard to control the level of fuzziness with the Zombie, but it still has a variety of awesome distortion sounds. The Boss MD-2 is my favorite heavy distortion pedal right now, and I feel that, although it gets as heavy as the Metal Zone, it is a lot smoother than most Boss overdrives and distortions.

Re: Best High Gain distortion pedals

The best I've heard are some pedals from MI Audio. The Tube Zone for smooth and chug-chug distortion and Crunch Box balls to the wall Marshall tone.

Re: Best High Gain distortion pedals

The Fulltone OCD with its gain control set high provides crazy amount of high gain distortion. Chuga-chuga in spades, and pinch harmonics come out very easily. Give it a shot!

Re: Best High Gain distortion pedals

i wanna try it, but the stores i go to never have it. rats!

I actually bought it and I personally didn't like it, but it was okay. I was going to send it back because it wasn't what I liked. But is it still a cool pedal. Would you be interested in buying it? I have only used it a few times. It was just over 30 days and I can't return it. It didn't work as good with my main amp....but hey the other guy really likes it...

Just looked at the website. The Tube Zone looks pretty interesting.

Does anyone have any reviews? Maybe I will do a seach.

Legacy, the hyde side of that pedal should be enough. You probably need to set the EQ it and tone a bit different than you have.

I own the Tube Zone and Crunchbox. The Tube Zone will do the Mesa Boogie sound no problem, plenty of gain but not to "Death Metal" extremes. The TZ is also very flexible, you can get a ton of sounds from it, low to high gain. As previously stated, the CB is balls to the wall Marshall, slightly more gain than the TZ.

Cheers,

CJ

Re: Best High Gain distortion pedals

I'm using it with an all tube amp are you?

Yeah, the "psycho-acoustic" 3-D sound effect they talk about actually seems to work, but the distortion level can't be turned down much without using the guitar's volume knob. It is actually one of the cooler heavy distortions I have, but but I sometimes like to set heavy distortions to moderate fuzziness. The Zombie sounds pretty awesome with tube amps and solid state amps. A good-sized speaker cab lets its character stand out well.

Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of the hyde and I set it up right. I am just wondering if there are pedals that have even more gain that sound great.

Re: Best High Gain distortion pedals

Go with the MI audio Crunch box or tube zone, depending on which suits your taste better...

I have a crunch box and it's awesome -- it has that cranked JCM800-ish kind of sound and feel.

Re: Best High Gain distortion pedals

Here's a ranking of the distortion pedals I tried:
Recommended:
1. Damage Control Womanizer and Demonizer (2X12AX7)
2. Yerasov PD-5 PteroDriver (2X12AX7, a floor copy of Engl 530 preamp)
3. Marshall JackHammer JH-1 (Solid state)
4. SMB SuperTubeProfessional STP-6 (2X6H2n,1X6H3n)
5. ToneBone TriMode and Plexitube (Hybrid:SS+1x12AX7)
Also I recommend Seymour Duncan SFX-03 TwinTube Classic pedal, although I didn't try it myself. Judging upon the clips I've heard, it's awesome. It'll be my next buy.
Not recommended:
6. DOD/Digitech Grunge FX69 (SS)
7. Boss HyperMetal HM-3 and MetalZone MT-2 (SS)
