Best High Gain Modelers

Re: Best High Gain Modelers

I'd wait and try the Valvetronix XL for sure before purchasing anything. The normal valvetronix amps are pretty darned good as is, so this should be pretty decent if they do their homework correctly.

Well i played the 100 watt version last week!
The models are somewhat "similar"..The differences are subtile in some models. It sounds "not" better than the original Valvetronix. The harmonics are great ,but the dynamics are somehowe not there...i dunno.I didn't like it!
I would stick with the blue ones...

BTW ,the Line6 HD147 is the best modeller head if you look for 1 clean sound and killer high-gain sounds.
The Bogner ,Diezel and Cornford models melt your face.
You need a good cabinet tho!

Re: Best High Gain Modelers

This is the best High-Gain "modeler" I've tried:

It's not really a modeler, per se ('cause it really doesn't model anything), but a tube distortion pedal with DI out, so you can record direct to your sound card or console. But it does Saturated high gain like no modeler I've tried.

Yess! :headbang:
that thing sounds really great! And you can take it with you whereever you go!
A Demonizer and a MXR 10 band EQ together is a really strong Artillery!

I didnt even think about this !
This thing is killer !

Re: Best High Gain Modelers

I own the Vox VT XL 30 watt. It has some good sounds but so does the UX1 with the Metal Pak through an amp/direct. An XL head with a 4x12 would probably be great.

Agreed. I don't understand why they don't just make a 100 watt head version like they did the chrome series. It would be much more in line with the needs of most metal heads as they would probably want a vicious 4x12 to stick it on. Given the more aggressive voicing, you'd think that a head would be the first thing they included in the line.

The 30 watt amp sounds quite good to my ears. I don't feel that the dynamics are off as Demon BBQ suggests. Of course the dynamics of most high gain amps tend to get squashed a bit due to all the gain. You don't get lots of dynamics as a function of adding all the gain.

Well i was comparing it with the original Blue ones! But hey..who knows..maybe the speakers wheren't played enough.I was the first one to test it!

Re: Best High Gain Modelers

I hated the Damage Control when I tried it - maybe it'd be cool as a distortion pedal, but for direct recording... sounded asstastic to me.

Vetta II is still the best 'modeler' I've found.

Re: Best High Gain Modelers

I will say that the mid to very high gain models aren't voiced all that different from each other. They all seem to be just differing stages of gain on the same amp and same channel except for one amp that's a tad muddy. The model does sound good to my ears though. It's not going to win any awards for versatility in that regard, but I like it well enough. It has a couple of decent marshall models (including a fairly decent plexi model and a higher gain JCM-900 type model) a good clean model and several different iterations of the same high gain amp IMHO.

Re: Best High Gain Modelers

As mentioned previously... there's no reason to talk about any other modeler now that the Fractal Audio Axe-FX is out. They are at the top of the game and the effects are studio quality.

Re: Best High Gain Modelers

Looking at the Fractal's manual, I can't tell if it can do 2 separate preamps at once.

The Fractal is nice, but the Boss GT-Pro does about the same (and in some instances more) for 1/4 the price. You are paying for it being a low production item and for frequent updates, which you don't get with the Boss.

If I was honestly going to spend that much on a modeler- the better choice would be a MacBook Pro with some of the awesome plug-ins out there...a Mac would have much more processing power, and would be a lot more configurable. John McLaughlin has been going this route for a few years, and it sounds great.

Re: Best High Gain Modelers

Another thing to consider, the new POD, the X3 will be coming out soon. They will also have a modeling amp designed along with Bogner, so that should have some good high-gain sounds.

Exactly!I am not making that amp bad.I just compared them to the blue ones!

Wait....so what are you talking about. Line 6?? Who makes the X3 and who will have the amp designed along with Bogner?
