Best High-gain rhythm pickup

Re: Best High-gain rhythm pickup

Duncan Distortion, Custom or Alt 8. Any of these pickups will give you a meaty low end with tight bass.

Seymour Duncan JB

Even though I'm a fan of the JB, it has or lacks some kind of quality that makes it not work well for rhythm.

The Custom and DD seems to me where it's at. I've only heard an invader is my friend's strat and it sounds really good too. Very alive. Though I don't know much about it.

Never heard a jazz bridge yet. How tight can it get?

1. THE INVADER HELLL YEARRGGHHHH!!!!!!
2. the INVADER!!!!!
3. um... INVADER!!!!
4. some other lame ass pickup?

The reasons why invader is the best pickup for metal/hard rock.
1. James Hetfield used it for the Master sound(need i say more?!?)
2. The invader has the most solid and heavy sound of any pickups that i've heard. This is due to the fact that it's mostly lower mid range oriented thus making the high and low distortion elements less emphasized when overdriven. This makes the bass heavy and upper mid range fast and tight. Amp is driven hardest in the lower mid range region and thus does not sound boomy or muddy, ever! Even if upper mid range is cut down, the amp will not sound thin due to the huge push in lower mid range region.
----------------------------------WARNING!!!! ULTRA-VIOLENCE---------------------------------------------------
-Ok, but what if I do not cut down upper mids and use drop/lower than usual tunings? -Well the pickup will rip your head off, and not in a clean and tidy fashion; think of chainsaw with rusty chain, think of cable around neck and attached to the rear of a car, think of neck smashed with sledge hammer, think anything blunt and heavy used for cutting.

Best High-gain rhythm pickup
By rhythm pickup do you mean a neck pickup? Or are you talking about a bridge pickup with a great sound for high gain rock/metal rhythm guitar?

A great neck pickup for high gain is the Parallel Axis neck PATB-1n.

There are a lot of great bridge pickups for high gain metal. Everyone's got a different preference. My favorites would probably be the Full Shred or Screamin Demon, but I like that tight 80's crunch. It depends on the sound you're after and the feel you want from it.

Re: Best High-gain rhythm pickup

Hands down - Invader!!!

For strictly rhythm in the bridge position, this is the BEST pickup for high gain!!!!! Once you start playing leads.....its a whole nother story.

Now, if you are looking for a neck pickup, the Jazz is probably your best bet from Duncan. For all brands, I would say a Bill Lawrence L-500C for high gain rhythm work.

Him and Kirk used duncans back in the day before they switched to actives.

Re: Best High-gain rhythm pickup

Both of Hetfield's V's (Epiphone and Jackson) had Invaders in them, and they were used quite a bit from 1983 to 1987. But around 1985, he started using Explorers more with stock pickups, and around 1988 loaded his guitars with EMG's. Kirk used Duncans for a short while, but he started using EMG's earlier (1984 I think?).

If you watch YouTube videos of some of the performances where James uses the Invader, it doesn't sound very good, compared to his Explorer. It's unnaturally punchy and bassy.

It can be any position as long as you think it sounds the best for high-gain. But IMO, I've found that bridge position pickups were best for high-gain rhythm. I really only use the neck for solos and low gain or clean rhythm.

My favorites would probably be the Full Shred

How is the full shred for detuning?

Is it really that bad for leads?

For stock pickups, probably the Custom.

How about for swapped magnet pickups?

Re: Best High-gain rhythm pickup

I stand corrected, thank you guys it is interesting learning that

Re: Best High-gain rhythm pickup

Demon. For 80'sshizz, feed it into a Marshall. For newer stuff, go into a Mesa. Either way, it'll be clear, tight, articulate, chunky, and aggressive. Pretty much everything you'd want in a high gain rythm tone.
