best humbucker in a strat

Re: best humbucker in a strat

I have recently been looking at the George Lynch Screamin Demon. anyone tried that one

Re: best humbucker in a strat

I've got one in the bridge of my Epi LP. I like it really well. The name is a little bit deceptive. It's a moderate output pup, not something that is going to fry your preamp.

Re: best humbucker in a strat

actually, if I were to get a good deal on both a used a5 custom and a '59, then I could sell one(after it's been modified) and maybe even make money. Ill have to check the numbers first.

Re: best humbucker in a strat

or actually, even if I get both pickups new, it would only cost like 75 after I sell one. And my dad said he would buy the humbucker

Re: best humbucker in a strat

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that the custom with an alnico 5 is just a custom 5. I've heard that a custom 5/59 hybrid is great in a strat with surfers.

Re: best humbucker in a strat

I'm thinking about getting the hybrid right now so haven't personally used it but I've heard it works great with 250k pots which is the desirable value for your single-coils

Re: best humbucker in a strat

Thats what I've heard when you have an alnico 5 magnet in the hybrid as opposed to the alnico 2 which would have less highs. I've ordered one of these hybrids and all my advide here is speculation. I also don't know how the hybrid would work well with an ash body, not saying it'll be bad I simply don't know.

Sorry to be so vague with advice but I simply don't know so don't want to pretend I do and mislead you.

Re: best humbucker in a strat

For me, it's the '78 from the Duncan Custom Shop - it's my very favorite humbucker in the bridge position of a Strat. It's a 9K pickup and should also be good with the alnico 5 Strat pickups although I've only used my '78 in my single bridge pickup Strat.

In terms of balancing the relative volume difference between a Strat neck and middle and a humbucking bridge pickup, Seymour recommended I use a Jazz neck humbucker as a bridge pickup.

Oh I know that the pickup will sound good in ash, because a lot of people that use them use them in frankenstein copies (frankie was an ash body) so it should yield a van halen type tone. not that VH is my goal, but I do love that sound and the fact that when split, I will essentially have an alnico 5 single coil (just like my other pickups)

Re: best humbucker in a strat

If you're chasing the VH sound then in an ash body the custom shop 78 might be one to consider. I know Lew is a big fan of this and MJ said it was the best for a hss strat when I spoke to her.

Re: best humbucker in a strat

It's going to vary from strat to strat. You could take one pickup and it'll sound totally different in several strats. The best in one isn't necessarily the best in another.

Re: best humbucker in a strat

I have to say that the '78 doesn't work for me in a Strat with tremolo. It is just too thin.

I think that the '78 is for Gibson style guitars or something like EVH's destroyer, and I think that is what Duncan intended.

For EVH sound in tremolo guitars you would use the hotter wind EVH pickups.

For me and a trem a Pearly Gates works much better than the '78 to get there.

Sorry it didn't work in your Strat. Sure sounds GREAT in mine!

Mines an alder Strat with rosewood fingerboard and just one pickup: the '78. Mine is a '78 Trembucker so it matches the Fender string spacing at the bridge perfectly.

I use it just like EVH with one volume pot and no tone pot. I use a newish CTS 500K pot.

There's just nothing not to like about it. It's got it all.

It's one of my two favorite sounding humbuckers I've ever owned, the others being the Tom Holmes humbuckers I have in an almost identical Strat cut for two humbuckers.
