As someone who has always written and performed my own music, I don't 'get' tribute bands, but hey, I dig diversity.

I can't see any difference between a cover band and a tribute band, except the fact the 1st may be a little more free about the arrangement, the 2nd might be a little more technical inclined, at least for the dress side...

If you want to look and sound authentic in a GnR tribute band, the signature slash set in Zebra would be a great place to start. I have a set and think they are perfect for 80s Rock, especially GnR, and are versatile enough for blues and covering other styles.

yes, they are.
In a strat they can even do some early VH stuff with a Marshall on full, trust me
