Best Kind Of Paint For Amps?

I think I'm going to paint up my little Fender Champ 600. What would be the best kind of paint to use on this? I'll just be doing the vinyl and I'll be using a brush.

Thanks,
Eric

I think a spray paint would work better - it seems like it would bond better then something brushed on - I could be wrong.

In either case, you will want prepare the surface. Wipe it down with soap and water, then something like vinegar. This will get rid of any oils in the vinyl, then lightly etch the surface to give the paint something to bond to.

Krylon Fusion

I've actually heard mixed reviews of this product. I know Krylon says it bonds to plastic, but like I said - mixed reviews. Have you used it?

I've never tried painting vinyl. But I do have a bit of experience painting styrene and ABS plastics in high use conditions. I build and fly rockets that use plastic parts such as nose cones. I find that after cleaning and priming, regular Krylon paint works quite well (even after a rocket falls 1000 feet without a parachute :omg: )

EDIT: I yield to the gentleman from Long Island (see below)

SEM vinyl spray paint will work best, not brush on stuff. it's what's used on car dashboards when they change the color. we used it on my friends late 80s Mazda RX-7 that had a nasty shade of a blue dashboard and we sprayed it satin black and it came out great. a nice natural satin black that looked like real vinyl that came that way from the factory not some glossy spray painted looking thing which is what happens if you use regular spray paint...i've seen that at car shows...not pretty. i was quite amazed at how good it looked actually.

a quick search brought up this place that sells it and the prep materials for it too...

i've never bought from them but that's the correct product to use.

I used Fusion on external trim pieces on my old Jeep (fender flares)

I can't attest to how it works with vinyl, but I'm also uncertain what those fender flares were made of.

I find that the phenomenon of mixed reviews is often resultant of hasty or lazy prep work. YMMV.

I think it's a good low cost option here if price is an issue. Always test-paint a spot or a similar material first!

I used Krylon Fusion on the pickup rings of a guitar, and through the sweat of a bunch of shows it never wore off. It's like any paint if the amp gets thrown into a van three nights a week, but that's what happens anyway...it's the reason Leo went with Tolex in the first place...nice finishes get beat to p!$$ on the road.

Re: Best Kind Of Paint For Amps?

I wasn't really interested in spraying it a different color. I have a picture that I got my idea from. I'll try to get it scanned up tonight.

Thanks,
Eric

If I were to paint it, I'd listen to XSSIVE's advise.

But, I wouldn't paint it. I'd use the opportunity to improve my skills at re-covering with tolex or vinyl. Go get a yard of tolex or vinyl, some industrial spray glue, sandpaper, and industrial seaming glue for the folded edges.

Re: Best Kind Of Paint For Amps?

Listen to Mike (XSSIVE)...

SEM is professional grade paint in a rattle can.

Re: Best Kind Of Paint For Amps?

I really don't think anyone has gotten what I am wanting to do. lol

Here is a pic. I know it can explain it better than I can.

I know that amp does not have the same material covering it as mine, but when I say paint that is what I was meaning.

If you are talking about painting the Tolex (vinyl) the last thing you want to do is get spray cans. Is there a KellyMoore near you? They have a product called Dura-Poxy. It is water borne enamel and will stick like mad. When we could no longer use solvent based products for things like elevator doors and bathroom partitions, we switched to this. It will stick to lacquer like no bodies business. Just spray your champ with some 409, wipe off with a sponge dipped in clean water and you are all set. Comes in all the colors you want. Sierra Coatings also makes water borne enamels that stick to metal file cabinets, it will also work just fine. If you have no KM Paints near you, just go to any major paint store and ask for a water based enamel that will stick to a file cabinet. Use a brush, small roller, whatever you want. You do not need anything special to paint over vinyl. I painted thousands of miles of it in San Francisco office buildings after the vinyl wall covering got old and too dirty to clean.
Good Luck :)
