Best Les Paul for $1000

Re: Best Les Paul for $1000

I guess you could get an Edwards for about that money.

There's also a couple companies that build LP-copies for about 500-700 and you could use the rest of the money for upgrades like pickups and/or electronics.

Not sure how good is the used market in Australia for buying a used Gibson...

Re: Best Les Paul for $1000

a warmoth ;) body will set you down to 450$, neck 288 (wenge/ebony), than the hardware (150 for a set of gotoh tuners, gotoh bridge and tailstop) and 60$ for a set of GFS pickups. if you can clear out 150$ more you'll have a set of duncan's and a nicer body. you'll only have to fix the finishing yourself. and then? you'll have a guitar you don't want to put down. trust me on this one. there's a reason I have 17 warmoth les pauls and just 2 gibsons.

Re: Best Les Paul for $1000

Talking new guitars, I vote for the flat-finished Studio Tributes that are in guitar shops everywhere right now. $850 for a brand new twin P-90 carved top Les Paul is very decent if you are a P-90 lover like myself. I've played these guitars in shops several times. I like 'em a lot. My '83 Custom has twin P-90's, though, so I cannot really justify getting the Studio Tribute. If I did, I'd probably immediately give it a clear coat of gloss nitrocellulose rattle can lacquer. The flat finishes wear off but quick, like the early Melody Maker re-issues.

I've been looking at the studio's and the 60's tributes. The 60's tributes i've been playing have been lacking a lot of character.

Re: Best Les Paul for $1000

I like the idea of the P-90 set up - toying with either a 60's tribute, or a Warmoth Mahogany Tele (like George Harrisons..but with a P-90 neck)

This.

I hate Epiphones and ended up buying an Epiphone Les Paul Custom because it was good.

Re: Best Les Paul for $1000

unfortunately ebay's about as good as it's going to get, ie used gibsons (maybe an orville?)

although i think the edwards page LP is all-lacquer...

please don't buy an LP copy with a 2" shellacing of poly over mystery wood and try and convince yourself you made the right decision.
you're better than that.

For new, click above. For used, I've never really bonded with any Gibby Studios- I personally don't care for lack of binding on the body and neck-looks weird to me, but for some reason the alpine white with gold hardware and ebony board I like. Most of the ones I've played have been poorly put together, but of course there are always exceptions to the rule. They don't get nearly as much TLC as the newer traditionals and standards get.

I paid $1050 for my Hamer Monaco Elite in near new shape and it's every bit built as well as any Historic I've played (better really if you take into consideration the Hamer neck joint, and how much time/hands on work goes into each Hamer USA guitar vs.a Gibson Historic). The looks are not for everyone, but if the difference in aesthetics does not bother you and If you can find one used, go for it. You might find a good used Heritage HC150 in that ballpark as well.

I would agree in the vast majority of cases, especially in regards to MIC/MIK/MIM imports and lower end USA stuff. However there are certain brands, and high end guitars I would buy without hesitation online if I wanted them. I'm pretty confident in buying most MIJ clones based on my experiences with Tokai, Edwards, and Fernandes/Burny. I would not hesitate to buy a Gibson Historic/Custom shop, PRS USA, Dean USA, Heritage, or Hamer USA guitar online either.

Fender custom shop is one high end guitar I'd be slightly leary of based on a experience a couple years ago in which I picked up a a CS 59 relic strat that was one of the most horrible looking relic jobs and mediocre sounding strats I've handled (especially considering the $3000K price tag).On the same rack was a roadworn 60s strat in the same color (3 color burst) that looked more realistic, and had a much nicer sounding piece of wood. The store guy was not terribly happy when I pointed that out :D

Re: Best Les Paul for $1000

You actually touched a Relic...and a Road Worn...and on the same day? Ew. I cannot even stand to look at them, let alone touch... :D

If you've got a grand in hand buy the oldest Tokai you an get your hands on...the market is down, 3 to 5 years ago 80's Love Rocks were bringing close to 2k, today I rarely see them break $1000. Some do but more often than not you can pick up a nice mid 80's Love Rock for $600-900.

Re: Best Les Paul for $1000

if it were me, i'd consider offering orpheo $750 for one he made or would make, and with a little upward haggling & shipping, it'll be under a grand and have all the specs you want.

Re: Best Les Paul for $1000

+1 on a used Studio or an old Tokai.

Re: Best Les Paul for $1000

How many tributes have you had a chance to play? Out of the 5 I tried before I bought mine I'd say 3 of them were really solid, and admittedly the only reason I didn't like one was because it felt too light to me.

I'd say try to hit some more local/regional gibson dealers and play more of them, if you want a p90 les paul IMO this is your best bet. Not that old tokais and edwards aren't good, but I'd much MUCH rather buy a guitar that I could find and try out 5-6 of locally than buying sight unseen. Plus at $850 you could spend not much more over $1000 and have new pots/caps, callaham bridge, and nut. Or just get a hardshell case, cause they don't come with those
