Best low wattage plexi tone amp

Re: Best low wattage plexi tone amp

I agree that attenuators suck tone, BUT... they such a lot less out of a 20 watt amp than a 100 watt amp. Also, if you play a small amp cranked though an attenuator all the time, you're burning up two small, cheap tubes rather than a quartet of big, expensive tubes.

And any decent attenuator is better that a MV for getting the cranked sound.

Re: Best low wattage plexi tone amp

The miniplex might indeed be the solution I'm looking for. Its not exactly cheap but far from the crazy prices some other options run.

More importantly it does sound like it would give me the tones I'm after both at bedroom level and still have enough power for some jam sessions.

I've got to agree about the attenuator's as well. I had one for a JCM900, the THD Hotplate and while a good unit, if you really tried to cut the level down to late night levels it just killed the tone.

They seem to work pretty well for moderate reduction for stage volume, helping lower the SPL for mic'ing the amp and so forth but no, not for playing a 100watter at 1am.

The London Power cirucit seems quite intresting though. Is there really no tonal tradeoff from using it ?

Re: Best low wattage plexi tone amp

Given my longtime love of all things Hendrix, in addition to my current playing style shifting towards more of a dirty bluesy style ala Jimi I've been recently been purchasing a few new effects pedals to try to really come close to his tones. Octavia, Axis Fuzz, Uni-vibe clone (Microvibe so maybe not a clone but it does the job) Teese wah (this thing can do most anyone) and so forth.

Naturally it would make sense to have a plexi style head to play such effects through to really complete the who vintage vibe. Crunchbox through a HRD does get a Marshall vibe but its much to 80's JCM and overall metal. not bad but not right either, know what I'm saying ?

I know theres some other good plexi style pedals, CM makes a fine one I hear, but I sort of want to get a bit more authentic.

Problem being the 1959HW and other true Plexi style heads are not only expensive but darn loud! Some of the loudest sounding amps I've even played in fact and unlike some more modern fare, the more you crank it, the better it keeps getting.

But money aside, theres no way I can crank a 100 watt head or even the 50 watt version.

I've got to do most of my playing at home when the family is sleeping these days.

So I needless to say, I'm looking for something thats voiced very similar, all tube and low wattage.

Not to diss modelers but I'm not a fan really. They sound fine when you use the built in effects but I want to load the frontend with my analog effects and not clip some cheap A/D converts like what happened when I used to have a POD XT.

All of the little cheap 5 watt tube amps by Epiphone, Crate etc all sounded a bit too American voiced to my ears. Good amps for dirty blues sure but not a vintage british voicing.

Vox makes some nice stuff with the AC30 and AC15 but they are a bit too chimey and while vintage, they didn't have the plexi crunch and bite.

What can you all tell me aobut the Orange Tiny Terror ? I don't know much about Orange amps though they are certainly British and I'm guessing they'd have the right voice ?

Does anyone do any mods to amps like the Valve Junior that can really turn it into a mini plexi ?

How about this Songworks Hi/Lo Plexi ? http://www.songworks.com/hilowattplexi.html
Sounds promising but I know nothing about the company

Any other builders out there got something that might do the job ?

Are you aware that a lot of Jimi Hendrix's song were actually played on Fender and Sunn amplifiers?

While I am not knocking Marshall amps, Jimi played a lot more than just Marshalls....

From a guitar player who lived during his life!

Re: Best low wattage plexi tone amp

If money is no object (although there is the option of building it yourself), a powerscaled Metropoulos is the ultimate plexi sound, even at bedroom level. I finally got around to power scaling (PS-Box) mine this week, and I amazed at the tone.

Yes I've read a lot of information about some of the amps used during the studio sessions (which really is great reading at some of the history and pioneering spirit that used to be a part of the studio experience. We sadly don't see as much of that anymore with the time is money menatlity and a single engineer simply doing it "by the numbers" on a protools rig)

Anyways though, I've actually always been more a fan of Jimi's live sound (for all its glory and some of its weaker moments)

Some of the studio tricks are certainly awesome but at the same time, they sometimes took a little too much away from his pure playing.

Just like RHCP's latest disc, yeah the layering and synths etc do sound cool but they sort of take away from the heart and soul of the performance, if that makes sense.

Thats why I love the live at Berkley and BOG stuff so much, its so very raw and personal. Your hearing Jimi as just a guitarist pure and simple.

Axis is still an amazing record don't get me wrong, but if your not on alot of drugs listening to it through headphones its a bit of fluff on some tracks and I personally just wait for Jimi to rock out with more numbers like Spanish Castle Magic.

I read up on the London Power FAQ link as well from the Fagen site. Really cool new technology I think is going to really shake things up.

They presented it very clearly as well which is nice as I know not everyone understands some of the tech talk (myself included at times)
