Alnico Pro II

Why? Clarity and tone, my friends. Rips a mean AC/DC tone, turn up the gain on your rig and you can bust some killer metal (on a high gain amp of course). Mi gusta mucho!

No offense to Stratdeluxer or BachToRock. The hybrid was fantastic but I didn't find it versatile enough for my tastes. It does what it does very well, but it lacks in some areas (praticularly in the lows, to my ears--definitely the best in harmonic highs though.)

Honorable mention: DiMarzio VHot PAF, clear and nasty (lacks the beauty of the Alnico Pro II. Great for '76 style (and slightly hotter) punk rock.
Also the Duncan Antiquity (never had one myself, but my buddy's geetar sounds pretty derned good!)

Now having said that...BRING IT ON...what other p'ups should I try?

CHEERS. :beerchug:

BurstBucker 2b/1n set :D

Can do the "sweet" APro thing and get nasty/aggressive too. Quite versatile. My fave pups in a Paula so far...ever..kinda what I always wanted the Custom/59 combo to be..Custom was a bit to agressive for "classic" LP tones and cleans are yucky.. and the 59n could be a little too sweet...great for high gain lead work in the upper registers but not nasty enough for "heavy blues" type stuff.

For Duncans , I'd try the PG or Seths.

I agree 100% with your review of the Custom.

I've heard (not played) Pearlys and found them a little brittle. I should give them a spin myself though. I should definitely try Seths...and I need to try Burstbuckers too! Thanks for the suggestions--keep them coming!!!

WCR Goodwood.

Nothing else except Voodoo 59s are in the same league...:smokin:

Re: Best LP Bridge P'up Thus Far (IMHO)

Pearly's are killer in a LP.

I use mine with a 250k tone pot in the bridge to tame the highs a touch.

Voodoo 59s are definitely on the "to try" list. Been wanting to try some of WCR's offerings...but I've been focusing on less expensive p'ups thus far.

Good suggestions all...keep 'em coming.

I never considered that...not a bad idea.

Re: Best LP Bridge P'up Thus Far (IMHO)

this is such a common debate ...

personally, I think if you're going for a classic LP tone, then any of the PAF type pickups should work .. the rest is deciding if you want alnico 2 or 5 - i.e., "earlier or later PAF" - and matching the pickup to the guitar and amp

Re: Best LP Bridge P'up Thus Far (IMHO)

What I am gonna say won't sound very original but anyway here it is: Matching the pickups with the wood is the essential thing!

I have a R7 which sounded real bad with Tim White's (#197, 198) timbuckers. The neck was great but the bridge was simply too weak. But the same set of HBs does an excellent job, I mean phenomenal in my R8. On the other hand, the rolphs I have in that R7 sounded somewhat muffled (compared to timbuckers) in my R8.

But nowadays my favorite guitar is my third LP with a 8.90K PhatCat bridge with a 7.50K a4 59n. I am not saying it is better or worse, it's different. This guitar sounds CLEAR but THICK! And I love it.

So what I mean to say is that one set of pickups might do wonders in one guitar, but in another it might sound real crappy. (Happened to me with a set of Peter Florance's 59s ;) !!!)

Best,

B

PS. In the Duncan line I think antiquities with magnet mods used for finetuning to match the wood, are the best. I think they are at least as good as all the boutique ones I have tried. I mean sometimes I prefer one over the other but this is not because ants are worse, its just because ants are different then rolphs or timbuckers.

And I think the best set of non-custom shop PAF clones is a set of Pearly Gates! :smokin:

What about your BBQ?

I dunno....the BBQ is just too thick for me. The vhPAF is alot more balanced and clear IMO. I've got a set in my McNaught and everyone remarks on how great the guitar sounds :bigok:

I would agree pearly's kik bumms!!! the pearly plus is good too, or the phat cat.

Re: Best LP Bridge P'up Thus Far (IMHO)

If you like the APHII ,give the CC a try. It could be your partial the A2 magnets like I'm finding I am.Its higher output but it doesnt sound or feel like it so much.

Re: Best LP Bridge P'up Thus Far (IMHO)

Interesting.. I would guess the Alnico Pro II to be mild mannered.. I too want a sweet sounding tone from my Paul that can deliver for metal but give me that big paul 70s rock sound.. (boston, REO, Aldo Nova and my Fav JOHN SYKES!!))
