Best Marshall JCM Style Amp

Title says it all.
What amp, short of an actual JCM-800, does that pushed, almost heavy kinda sound?
I've heard good things about Orange, Blackstar, Egnater, the list goes on.
Which one would be "more Marshall-y,"?
Just curious as to you guys' opinions.

Re: Best Marshall JCM Style Amp

None of the others you mentioned come close. Not even Marshall has been able to pull it off in more versatile models like the DSL or JVM.

If you cannot do the real thing there are some great 800inabox pedals out there. But buying an Orange or Blackstar is a waste of time and money.

Re: Best Marshall JCM Style Amp

Why can't you get the actual 800?

Having owned a few myself, nothing sounds quite like them. I'd love to get ahold of a vertical input 2204 again.

Re: Best Marshall JCM Style Amp

The JCM-2000 TSL 100/122 does pretty much whatever you want it to do within Marshall territory, and they are nice and cheap in combo form. Marshall's best sounding, and most versatile, amp since the '60's IMHO. I'm an idiot for selling my 122 to some ****** bag kid for $800 a few years back. My only complaint was that the foot switch crapped out and had to be replaced (under warranty).

Re: Best Marshall JCM Style Amp

I'm a Marshall fan, having owned 2 Jubilees, 800's, 900, DSL, Plexi, all of them.

I don't usually praise solid state or modelers, unless they're really good and useful.

Blackstar have really created a cool amp that does a lot of Marshall tones with their new solid state ID series. You almost forget that it's not a tube amp, because it's all voiced really nice. Way versatile, and the price is great since it's $500 for the 60W head and $600 for the 100W head. Even if you've owned good Marshalls, you'll appreciate how good the Blackstar ID amps are.

Re: Best Marshall JCM Style Amp

The TSL601 was probably the worst piece of crap that I ever picked up with my bare hand. Fizzy, buzzy, unwieldy and useless besides as a weapon when dropped from a high storey window.

Laney AOR and GH series are somewhat related to an 800. These would be my pick.

I picked up the 60W version and I'm pretty impressed with it.

I have the 100W head actually, and it kills. What you said about forgetting its not a tube amp is totally true.
I'm not really asking because I want to make a purchase, just asking for the sake of asking a question.

Re: Best Marshall JCM Style Amp

I have an 82 2204 and an Egnater seminar hot rod JCM style. Both are great. The eggie is darker, more saturated and smoother, but still cleans up and still feels somewhat 'Marshall' like... But the JCM800 has something to it... And it's bone stock. Cuts, snarls and flat out destroys small animals... Louder than anything I've heard too. Love it. Both in stereo is NUTS.

Re: Best Marshall JCM Style Amp

Like I said earlier, I'm not really asking because I'm looking to purchase something similar, I was just curious what, if anything, else does "that sound"

Re: Best Marshall JCM Style Amp

I liked that one forum dude's clip of a bugera 1990 with everything dimed. sounded very convincing to me. can't imagine how freakin' loud that must have been.

Re: Best Marshall JCM Style Amp

Saw a band last week where the lead had a Les Paul and a Silver Jubilee, rhythm guitar had a SG and a JCM 800. The jubilee sounded way more pushed and a little scooped, a little edgy, but nice and tight. I think the Jub and the 800 make a really awesome combo but if I ever had to pick one I'd say I really really liked the way the Jubilee sounded for harder stuff.

Opening band that night had a rhythm guitar with an 800 also, and their lead was on a new Orange OR50H. I'm sure settings played a part but the Orange sounded so thick and rich while not departing much from marshall territory.

long story short I now want both a Jub and an OR50H.

Re: Best Marshall JCM Style Amp

The best amps for marshall sounds that arent marshalls to me are the splawn quickrod and the ceriatone chupacabra.
