NAD (Did'nt expect this...)

Even two SM57's will sound different from each other. They are kinda like speakers where there's a lot of variation in productin where each one sounds slightly different. They are, in the end, speakers in reverse.

However, I suspect they vary from year of production to year of production, much like Celestions.

I used to have two SM57's. I bought them from the same store like 2 years apart from each other. I'm certain neither was fake, but they sounded pretty different from each other. One was fatter, darker, and lower output. Kinda like the mod people do to SM57's where they remove the transformer, just not quite as drastic. The second was brighter, tighter, and hotter. I preferred using that one.

The ones I have don't actually say "Shure SM57" . they're called "Yanglin" or something (pretty sure I have that wrong :laugh2:) but are otherwise identical to an SM57. They cost me about $20 each (w/ free shipping from china) :p

You'll probably love them cuz they have no bottom end whatsoever :p ..way too sharp/bright sounding for my tastes.

The real one I just got is a whole lot fuller sounding with way more body & warmth. Pretty much exactly what I was hoping for :bigthumb:

Were your other mics just different brand/model wannabe 57s, or were they actual "fake" 57s.
I know they have always been a hot item for counterfeits.

Wannabe's *see above*

They were louder/brighter/shriller than the real thing..

Oh, no, LOL. I love me some bottom-end in my sound. Exactly why I like me some Rectos and Kranks, LOL. I just like my SM57's to sound like SM57's.

If you're one of those people who think the SM57 is too brash in the high-mids, but still feel it's an overall good mic, try the Beyerdynamic M201 TG. I love tha mic on its own. Almost sounds like a blend of dual mic'ing using an SM57 and a Sennheiser MD421.

No..no..the upper mids are just fine. I'm 100% happy with the recordings I'm doing with the SM57. It's a hell of a mic for sure. I've always used them with cabs at gigs but never really got around to buying one..

I think between this one, my Sennheiser e906 (also great), my AT2020 (sweet) & the $20 BM800 condenser (c'mon ..20 bucks that totally get you there :bigthumb:) I am pretty well set up for my recording needs now :D

And another one w/ the Shure 57 & my Cicognani Brutus Live 30W + DIY 1x12 loaded w/ an Eminence Legend GB128. Zoom G1X Four in the loop for some delay/reverb. Amp was on the "Lead 1" Channel (lower gain... still a tad more than the Vox Night Train has on tap) with the "mid-push" voicing selected ...aka. the tone of the 80's :bigthumb:

And with the gainier "Lead 2" channel (same "mid-pushed" voicing selected). Forgot to mention that I had swapped out my usual NOS Russian 5881's for JJ 6L6 for the last clip...but now the 5881's are back in again cuz I prefer them..Also toned down the delay/reverb from the Zoom pedal :p
