Re: Best Mesa Amp?
If best is defined as the one that will be considered the "classic", it's a
tossup between the hardwood, cane front MkI, mostly for nostalgia reasons,
and it's association with Santana OOOORRRR the original handwired
Dual Rectifier. It's not point to point, but they were assembled with handwired
leads and pots inside. Those Rectifiers are considered the best ones, and
are the one's that Mesa collectors want. Also, the rare rackmounted, handwired one's you rarely see. I also think the MKIIC will always be a classic, especially in the eyes of Metallica and Petrucci fans.
The power amps like the 2:90, 295, 395, and Strategy 500 are tone monsters,
so those will be collectible in years to come, when the rack phase hits full swing again.
For the purpose of this thread, I'm going with the Single/Dual Rec, only because it's the sound of a whole generation of players and will be considered
Mesa's most well known amp. In addition, just add Svetlana power tubes
and GT 12AX7M's, and you might actually get one to sound good!
