Gotta love that sludgy, grainy mess of a tone. Listen to "Sweet Leaf", and you'll know what i mean.

Dave Mustaine.
The definitive speed/thrash-rhytm tone. Tight, cutting and percussive.

Adam Jones.
Sludgy Iommi-ish heaviness mutating into bizarre noises. Love it.

As for lead tones, i like Dave Murray, Yngwie Malmsteen, Eddie Van Halen, Michael Schenker and Marty Friedman.

There's many others, but i'm runnig out of time.

dimmu borgir's tone on track three (i think its called kings of the carnival creation) on the album puritanical euphoric misanthropia, and the whole album for that matter is some tight heavy tone!


u gotta love symphony X 's sound - especially the rhythm sound on sea of lies which sounds beefy as hell

older stuff - lynch's tone on the hunter (havent heard many other dokken songs) is kick a$$

and most maiden stuff sounds great too

Zakk Wylde's signature harmonics and inverted arpeggios can be identified within seconds.His tone on pride and Glory and the earlier BLS albums was my favorite. Something on the Blessed Hellride sounds off. Still Zakk, but missing something. On a totally different level, Slash had a hybrid classic sound in GNR that deserves recognition for tone. I went to a Metallica concert and was not at all impressed with the quality of sounds emmiting from the pro-audio, so I have a reservation when placing tone and Metallica in the same sentence. After that, I have to agree with the previous posts. Dimebag, George Lynch, and most others have left a noteworthy mark in the world of music for great tones.

And great metal bands/Players that survived in spite of the fact they almost entirely lack tone (IMHO):

• Metallica once they started using Telecasters

Not exactly sure but I think it was Load. To my ears I think I can detect a Tele on songs like "Poor Twisted Me," "Ronnie," "Cure," and possibly on "King Nothing." It sounds kinda like an adolescent Les Paul. Not quite the Les Paul tone yet, but hopes to be one day when it grows up.

In the beginning it's Tony Iommi, Jimmy Page and Hendrix

As of late I think Pepper Keenan, Woody Weatherman, Zakk Wylde and Kirk Weinstien offer the most modern heavy tones. In that southern death rock grind that is.

I don't know if you guys are gonna let me slide by saying Slash... but, I don't listen to metal at all, with the exception of a rare listen to early Metallica, I don't like metal, but Slash's tone is probably my all time favorite for hard rock.

For metal, I think I still like John Christ's(ex-Danzig) tone the most. Judgment Day ...Even without the pinch-harmonics, I'd still dig his tone.

I also like Dave Mustaine from Megadeth, killer tone! He plays Duncans! :laugh2:

My favorite heavy tone is on the track 'to awake and avenge the death' of Thrice. The breakdown riff before the ending part is just crushing heavy ass distortion! Sounds like my ears are going through a paper shredder!

Avenged Sevenfold and Killswitch engage have awesome tone too.

Slayer: Great cranked Marshall tone with lots of mids.

Motorhead: Same as above but more "vintage"

Iron Maiden: Piece of Mind has their best tone IMHO

Worst:

Dimebag DIAMOND Darrel: Hurts my ears, great argument against solid state amps.

ALL Metallica: No mids = NO TONE

All the trendy mallcore/Nu-Metal bands , doesn't matter which one, they all have a serious lack of tone.

idk y, but for some reason i love the tone off of ...And Justice For All. i also like the tone from Cowboys from Hell, i know the extreme scooped mids doen't always sound great but something from that song that i REALLY like. my all time favorite vintage metal tone goes to Iron Maiden, it's heavy as hell, but stil vintage although that could jsut b the recordings

first of all, u have no human right to dis anyone who at least 20 times as good as yourself. just cause other people say he's sloppy, and started using the wah (ALOT) doesnt mean he's dirt. him and hetfield probually had as much inspiration on people that Iommi had. they might not have created metal, but they perfected it. so stop talkin trash :firing: 2nd of all... ya he used used strats. theyre even in the one and i disappear videos.

Kirk and James, obviously, play many kinds of guitars. But yes, Kirk has been known to pick up an EMG equipped Strat (EMG even offers a Kirk Hammet active single coil pack) and I've seen James play a Tele. Kirk plays the Strat a couple times in their "Cliff 'em All" video. And there was a TV interview I saw in the late 90's where James mentioned toying around with new sounds including Teles for the "new" album.

tallica and teles.. the unforgiven2 and ronnie on laod.. prolly a lot more on the load album also

best tone? i like EdGuy's tone.. and the one that the guys got together in avantasia - the metal opera. i never considered tallica or deth tone as THAT good (well, dont jump on me with deth cos i really havent heard that much) but tallica never had that really uber kind of tone (except maybe on master of puppets lol)

i like emppu's tone on the nightwish records, did i mention edguy on mandrake?
maiden always had a pretty distinctive sound and i like them all, from iron maiden to dance of death. they have diferent eras, but they're all good IMO.. but their BEST sound would probably be brave new world (as my GF would agree to also hehe)
