Best Modelling Amp For Under $750

Re: Best Modelling Amp For Under $750

used cyber deluxe. Not gigable, but still loud enough to rock out when your parents aren't home, and quiet enough for bedroom volumes. I think they have a headphone jack too

stay away from the line 6 spiders

vox if you like british tones more than american

line 6 hd147?

Doubtful you could pull that and a cabinet for under $750.
The Spider II's look pretty cool, and a lot of people have said good things about the Vox's

Re: Best Modelling Amp For Under $750

There's nothing wrong with Line 6's Spiders. They're reasonably priced, sound good, and give you a large choice of types of amps they've sampled. I bought mine for $350 about 3 years ago, and it's come in terribly handy for all sorts of gigs.

Re: Best Modelling Amp For Under $750

I spend more time playing my modeling rig than I do my tube amps, due to noise restrictions. IMO, the best combination is a modeling head with a high quality cab NOT made by a modeling amp co. I've got a Vox AD60 head plugged into any of my 4-12 or 2-12 cabs by Marshall or Bogner. With the wattage selector, you can get killer tone at barely audible volumes. Just like a Tonelab, it has recording out, headphone out, and all the same features, minus cabinet modeling. Also, the Vox is laid out like an analog amp, so navigating the amps and FX is easy. Just like the Line 6 stuff, you've got to spend time dialing it in, so it's unlikely you'll be blown away at the music store. The 12AX7 power section, being fed to a SS power section is genious because it has a more tube-like feel under your fingers, and it sounds as good as a Vetta for 1/3 the cost.

Vox Valvetronix head AD60 mono $420 AD120 stereo $550 New prices.
2-12 or 4-12 cab by Marshall, Avatar, Mesa, Bogner, VHT, Soldano etc $250-$500

It'll be the only halfstack that sounds great at bedroom OR gigging levels. If you still want to use tube heads live, at least your ears will still hear the same cabinet.
I use the same cab, but use the Bogner head at rehearsal/shows, and the AD60 at home. I can come close to duplicating my Bogner settings using the modeler, without crumbling my walls.

Re: Best Modelling Amp For Under $750

yeah, the vox's are definately the most user friendly

but with the cybers you can get BLACKFACE FENDER models

its a matter of taste, once again, british or american

Re: Best Modelling Amp For Under $750

One good thing about buying a head is that you can make it more American or British depending on the cab. Since it's solid state, there's no tubes to dictate a certain tone, only the cabs. For instance, if you had a modeling head and fed it to the speakers in a Fender combo, it'd sound close to a Fender type sound. If you fed it to a Marshall 4-12, it'd take on a VERY British vibe. Modeling amp combos always suffer from cabinetry that's made on a budget, along with feeble speakers.
It's probably the #1 reason why tube afficionados can't enjoy the sound of modeling amps. If you level the playing field, using the same quality cab, the differences become less and less.

I had a L6 Spider II 1x12 and really like it. Good price and some very nice tones. Although with the exception of the delays and phaser, the effects are subpar.

If your really serious try the L6 Flextone amps. Best of their amp line IMO. Great tones & effects, plus you can downloasd updates from the L6 site.Usually run $500-$650 depending on which model.

The Vox Valvetronix amps are pretty good as well but some of the early ones are built somewhat cheaply.

Re: Best Modelling Amp For Under $750

always heard great things about the valvetronix line...more options than the tech 21's

but i can't complain about my tech 21 120 ($500 used)...it models fender tweeds, marshals, & mesas...you can tweak and get more individual sounds but those are the three base starting points and each have their own channel and at 120 watts it gets plenty loud and also still sounds good at low volumes!!!

best thing to do is find a store with them in it...bring your guitar or at least find one in the store that's the same or similar and play...play...play

then buy it used unless you get a sweet deal!!! lol!!!
