Best Modern High gain amp that is Toneful w/ Mojo NO PEAVEY

MODERN High(er) Gain amp that can go from sweet to crushing. Would prefer ideas that have clean channels, but you know what? If it doesn't have a true clean who cares? Chime in, please!

I hate to have to do this but YOU CANNOT LIST PEAVEY's.

Sorry, but there are soooooo many 5150, Triple X, and JSX owners who chime in, and it's just NOT on my list. I want to hear some more interesting non-GC type ideas.

How about a Peavey Rockmaster preamp into a Carvin SS power amp? LOL

Good lord boy, go play your Marshall! hahaha

Re: Best Modern High gain amp that is Toneful w/ Mojo NO PEAVEY

That's the problem
It's ALL I PLAY, I can't seem to get away from Marshalls.

Even clean! UGH! I actually love some of their models CLEAN! OVER FENDERS! I am out of my mind!

Add to that the whole vintage thing, and damn it...

I am an addict.

I am trying to get into some boutique or high gain junk.

Maaan I heard a Framus Dragon live a couple of days ago... That was a THICK heavy tone there. I loved it.

Re: Best Modern High gain amp that is Toneful w/ Mojo NO PEAVEY

What sorts of reference tones are you looking for? One man's modern high gain is another man's crunch.

Re: Best Modern High gain amp that is Toneful w/ Mojo NO PEAVEY

I really like VHT amps...IM n ot a high gain kind of guy and I really don't care for channel switching amps but if I were gonna buy a channel switching, high gain amp I would get a VHT Ultralead.

What do you mean by "high gain"...

Check out a Custom Audio Electronics OD100 or OD50....

The amount of sweet, fat, luscious thick drive that thing put out and the sheer VOLUME was just staggering. The clean tones were absolutely gorgeous, too.

I walked into this high-end musical instrument dealer intending to try out a Soldano SLO100 and i was sorely disappointed. The salesman directed me towards the CAA OD100 and I have to say that for what i like in an amp and what i like to hear it is EASILY the best guitar amp I've ever tried.

Yesterday, Olin was on my side of town looking at a Twin.
Today, I was on his side of the valley looking at all the good amps at the Amp Shop on Ventura/Woodman.

I don't like demoing all their amps when I have no intention of buying, but they do have some nice ones! ENGL, Framus, Suhr, Orange, Carr, and Komet.
Given the choice, I probably would have taken the Suhr OD100.

YO B2D THAT THING SOUNDS AMAAAAAAAAAAAAAZING

OH MAN! I have to hear that in person.
Don't tell me I have to drive to the OC to do it? ahhhhh

BTW I LOVE VHT Amps

AND GJ is right, maybe I should try playing - hehehe don't worry I practice. Hey they have a SUHR amp in there now? Yeah, I have to go see. I think Gary gets pissed at me - he thinks I am never gonna buy - hehehe

If he only knew - I went in there once with my credit card last year READY to buy a SHIVA ( I have witnesses), and he was really rude to me. I asked to plug in and he responded basically saying I am wasting time, put up or shut up kinda thing. I walked kinda pissed. He changed his vibe, and realized I didn't like it.

Well, that night someone emailed me with a '73 Marshall DIRT CHEAP, so I bought it and well there is my AMP SHOP story. What can I say, I am slow to spend $2400, that's just me.

The best is really suggestive, I couldn't even list one without some more specific styles listed.

For more modern type chug, I'd definately say a Rectifier.

For a more proggy sound, I'd definately recommend a Mark IV or a TriAxis setup.

For a more melodeath/grindcore sound, I'd wholeheartedly suggest a 5150.

More shred/lead oriented? VHT, hands down.

I understand you don't like the Peavey tone from this... what don't you like about it? I only ask because if I know where you're comming from, I can direct you a bit better.

Re: Best Modern High gain amp that is Toneful w/ Mojo NO PEAVEY

You could always add a Randall Guitar Subwoofer to your setup to give it more mojo, lol.

Re: Best Modern High gain amp that is Toneful w/ Mojo NO PEAVEY

PS - Pierre, I have yet to gig with my Framus. Maybe I should take it out tomorrow night? I am just so Marshall-ed out (is that a word?) that I haven't really given it a chance.

I am way too accustomed to Marshalls, and everything I like sounds identical - Bogners, VHT's.

Re: Best Modern High gain amp that is Toneful w/ Mojo NO PEAVEY

Mhmm I couldn't trust my ear to compare really. I'm not THAT familiar with Marshalls, nor am I with live tone. The room just sucked. But he had a very thick sound. He actually had a custom Framus 'Tele' with Rosewood neck and weird wood body, with possibly a JB in the bridge. The dude played some hardcore (the band was called Multi Purpose Chemical). It was thick and quite crunchy. VERY ballsy sounding. I don't really know how else to describe it. I just really dug it.

I'm in south OC... it was a 40 mile drive for me but daaaaaamn that amp made it worth it! And it's in a soundproof room with a few Deizels and they let you crank the sh*t out of it!

They allow walk-in customers on Saturdays... hell i could use another spin on that amp. If you ever head down to that store (only one i know of locally that carries it) let me know and I'll meet ya there just to say hey and shoot the **** while testing amps! They've also got a buncha other cool stuff there (check the site).

Just so's you know, Gary Hoey did sound pretty stunning through the XXX Peavey at the Dallas Guitar Show. :) Lew

Re: Best Modern High gain amp that is Toneful w/ Mojo NO PEAVEY

You need a Peavey Wiggy of course!!! j/p. What about the new Orange Rockerverb amps?

Weird.

I encountered one of these a few weeks ago & while the cleans were AMAZINGLY good we couldn't get a "dirt" sound out of the amp that made anyone really happy. I think it had more to do with the player then the amp but I was highly underimpressed with what was coming out of the speakers. I really wanted to have the guitar player use another amp for the rth gtrs but he wouldn't hear of it.

I'll go with the VHT suggestion...lots of gain & "thrust" on tap, super responsive too! If your used to high gain 'mush' they'll expose all the flaws in your playing. I used to have a 1x12 Pitbull & traded it for a 1998 AC30 with Alnico bluebacks...I don't really regret that swap.

Engl Powerball :headbang:
Huge range of Tone if you know how to work all the controls and eq correctly and it even has a real clean channel. And it probably has one of the biggest amounts of useable gain you can find today imo.
