Best Modern High gain amp that is Toneful w/ Mojo NO PEAVEY

Re: Best Modern High gain amp that is Toneful w/ Mojo NO PEAVEY

Marshall'd out? I guess I won't submit my usual Splawn recommendation, then.

Not a big fan of Framus, here. I think some of the Engl stuff sounds pretty good, though.

Koch Powertone II! :smokin:
I'm really looking forward to introduction of the Koch Supernova, hopefully somewhere in September. That thing is insane:
  • 4xEL34 + 8x12AX7
  • Available as 120W mono or 2x60W stereo
  • 5 channels with 4 independant tone controls (midi switchable)
  • 2 master volumes (midi switchable)
  • "Low", "Mid shift", "bright" an "high- cut" Voicing switches on all channels (midi switchable)
  • 2 Parallel and 2 serial FX loops wich will be true bypass when not used (midi switchable)
  • 8th 12AX7 serves as 'poweramp' (kinda like the Vox Valve Reactor) so you'll be able to dial in additional 'power tube distortion' (or to have the benefits of power tube distortion at low volumes).
It's more than I could ever wish for in one amp! :notworthy:
I'm no big fan of EL34's though, I'm more of a 6L6 guy, or maybe 5881 or 6550.

Oh, and it's going to be expensive as hell...

I really like VHT amps...IM n ot a high gain kind of guy and I really don't care for channel switching amps but if I were gonna buy a channel switching, high gain amp I would get a VHT Ultralead.

What do you mean by "high gain"...

Lotsa alternatives...but it always comes back to Marshall :bigthumb:

Why don't you just get an amp built or modded Olin instead of looking at "prepackaged"? Send a DSL or something off to one of the hot rodders (Splawn, Bray, Voodoo, jeff seal, etc) and they can tweak it exactly how you like.

I am way too accustomed to Marshalls, and everything I like sounds identical - Bogners, VHT's.
You just answered your own question right here. ;)

I've come to realize that no matter what other amps I use with the band, Marshall is it and always will be when it comes to the high gain stuff.

If you sound like you through anything but you like the Marshall tone, quit beating your head against the wall, save the money, and just use your Marshalls. Perfect your tone through them rather than trying to change it. ;)

Re: Best Modern High gain amp that is Toneful w/ Mojo NO PEAVEY

Carvin Legacy
Engl Powerball
Hughes & Ketter Duotone
Bogner Extacy
Orange Rockerverb
VHT
Diezel

I think almost all of those fall into that category

Just so's you know, Gary Hoey did sound pretty stunning through the XXX Peavey at the Dallas Guitar Show. :) Lew
Gary would sound stunning playing a Squier thru a Crate GX-15 !!!
The boy can PLAY :headbang:

I'm not a high gain guy, but I did have a VHT 2/50/2 & VHT GP-3 set up & it could smokem with the best of 'em!

Re: Best Modern High gain amp that is Toneful w/ Mojo NO PEAVEY

I'm in San Diego right now visiting my brother. And he just lives a couple of minutes away from Carvin, so I went in there yesterday. First of all, I wasn't overly impressed with the V3 or the Legacy, although the Legacy combo did sound pretty good. I think the main problem with that was that I was restricted to low volumes with my wife in the amp room. However, I played through the Tone Navigator/Carvin power amp setup. I have to say I was very impressed with the way that sounded, even at low volumes. The Tone Navigator has tons of presets that go from low to high gain with everything in between. I think I'm going to look more into this thing if I can while I'm out here.

Dude, if there's anyway you can report back on the solid state preamp they have, that'd be great. I've read it sounds pretty good, and can do metal. I think it's an SX300R. May the force be with you.

Weird.

I encountered one of these a few weeks ago & while the cleans were AMAZINGLY good we couldn't get a "dirt" sound out of the amp that made anyone really happy. I think it had more to do with the player then the amp but I was highly underimpressed with what was coming out of the speakers.

Hmmm... what speaker cab was being used? Maybe some better tubes could have helped? I played a stock one (using whatever tubes it comes with) through a Germino 4x12 loaded with G12H30s.

Didja check out the link to the amps I posted? They really DO sound like that... I dunno, maybe you didn't hear the amp under an ideal setup. Plus we had the thing nut-rattlingly loud. You're correct in the assumption that the amp is very "honest" and reacts accordingly to whomever is playing it. So basically it is a rather unforgiving amp because it's so sensitive and detailed but if your chops are on game then expect to be handsomely rewarded. :D

It's not what you would call a high-gain amp... there's plenty of gain on tap though but what it lacks in metawl-gan amounts it makes up for in pure volume and saturation, natural compression, and purity of the tone.

Fantastic peice of electronics, if i do say so myself.

I own a Legacy half stack. To really get that thing to sound good you've got to run better tubes in it than what come stock (JJ's and GT Gold Series stuff is preferable over the stock Sovteks and EH's, which i feel are too dark and undefined for that amp). Plus its a LOUD LOUD LOUD amp and the volumes need to be set to at LEAST four for the thing to sound good.

I do both of the above and I run a Dr. Z Airbrake attenuator to tame the thing so I don't get kicked out of the clubs we're playing at. ;) I also let it warm up for about 1/2 an hour before playing it to get the tubes hot and help out that "first three songs cold-amp syndrome" thing. It sounds better after it heats up for a little while.

I gotta say I DO love that amp. It's one of the few tube amps I'm completely satisfied with. I'm a picky mofo!

I think we are forgetting Soldano & Diezel

Depeding on the wattage and the amount of gain, I'd recommend checking out the following:

Fuchs ODS 100 - best amp I've ever played

Fender Super Sonic- quite a lot of amp for a grand. I loved the Bassman mode and the burn mode is the best Fender high gain I've ever played.

Mesa Recto-verb- it doesn't sound like a Recto. Really. :) I loved the cleans on this amp and the high gain chunk is simply pretty cool.

Mesa Mk IV- Scary good tone from a combo.

Re: Best Modern High gain amp that is Toneful w/ Mojo NO PEAVEY

For me it`s either the Mesa Mark IV or the Splawn Pro Mod:)

Maybe this is too obvious so no one's mentioned it so far, but have you tried a Soldano SLO-100?
