Best neck pickup to match SH14 Custom 5 bridge p/u?

For an alder body strat. HSH.

I need to pick a middle p/u also, preferably humbucking/noiseless "single"

Suggestions?

PGn is a great match with the Customs, as is the Jazz-you may want the Jazz bridge model though to beef up the output a bit to better match the C5.

Not a fan of noiseless singles, so cannot help you there.

Hi. Thanks. Those were some of what I was thinking. The Jazz N seems a bit quiet/tame, especially with the Custom 5. Was thinking of using Jazz bridge as you mentioned, or '59b, or PGb, or even a Sreamin' Demon.. or Duncan Distortion neck model..

I use the SH-2 Jazz neck with an SH-6 Distortion for brutal downtuned metal and the Jazz pairs up perfectly with the Distortion, both output- and tone-wise. And I have it quite far away from the strings. I've never had any issues with it's output or tone! Best neck pickup imo.

I've used a Jazz bridge in the neck paired up with a Custom 5 for almost three years.

Now I use an A4 '59n with an A8 Custom. Best combo ever.

HTH,

If you use bridge p/u in neck position, what do you have to do different?
flip magnets? reverse wires??

PGn is a great choice. The Demon is also a great choice for a neck pup. A '59b in the neck with a UOA5 or, as Kojak suggested, an A4 is also a terrific choice to pair with the C5.

There's a Trembucker version of the C5 with a Jazz neck in this - it works a treat and is my #1 goto guitar...

A '59b in the neck with a UOA5

Great suggestion. The 59b uoa5 is one of my favorites. For me, I like a bit of a mid scoop in the neck to keep it clean. Jazz, 59, Pearly are all good duncan choices. Dimarzio Air Classic is great as well. I tend to prefer a scooped but not super bright neck pickup so with the Jazz and 59 I end up modding them to warm them up, but the air classic is good to go stock.

PGn and JazzN. The PG if you want the sound of A5 with the chewy goodness of A2.
Use the JazzN if you want ultimate clarity and punch. Both are beautiful sounding neck pickups.

I like the 59n too, but usually only for soloing. It's a bit bloated sounding for rhythm, which is why some guys prefer the flatter response of A4 in it.

UOA5?

- If you turn the bridge p/u around so the screws are by the neck, you don't need to do anything to put it back in phase with what you're using in the bridge??

UOA5 = unoriented A5 magnet. It gives softer highs and some more mids than the typical polished A5 mag.

Rotating a pup doesn't affect the phase. Having the screws closer to the neck may give it a bit more oomph/guts.

You might want to post this as its own topic, so more people see it.

I always felt that the Custom 5 was to bright and lacking in mids.

I liked the Custom though. Same pickup but with a ceramic magnet.

Anyways, I used my Custom with a PGn and thought that was a nice sounding pickup set.

These days I might go with a Slash APH-2 as the neck pickup though...or not.

The APH-2n and the PGn are my two favorite neck pickups at the moment.

I'm a traditional blues player though. I don't use a lot of distortion and play with a clean rhythm tone and lightly overdriven soloing tone. No heavy metal.
